Mathie / Inkster Founded as Mathie in 1879, this rural settlement in Section 12-154-55, Inkster Township, was renamed Inkster when the post office was established August 9, 1880 with William Mathie postmaster. The name honored George T. Inkster, a local settler from a prominent family in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, where a street is named for his uncle, John Inkster. George T. Inkster (1848-1901) later was a cattle rancher in the Souris River valley. In 1885 the post office moved to Sections 13 & 24-154-55, the site of a new Great Northern Rail Road townsite, with a continuation of the old name. The elevation is 1040, the Zip Code is 58244, and a peak population of 368 was recorded in 1920, with a decline to 135 in 1980. |
