Levant This was a Great Northern Rail Road siding built in 1881 in SE 1/4 Section 24-154-52, Levant Township, six miles Northwest of Manvel, with a station added to the site in March 1882. The name was chosen by settlers from Levant, Ontario, Canada and is a name associated with the lands around the eastern Mediterranean Sea, centering on Syria. The name translates as sunrise, or orient. A post office was authorized January 8, 1900 with Isaiah Steen postmaster, but the order was rescinded October 5, 1900. A school house was here for many years, and a population of 10 was reported in 1920, but no real development ever took place and the site is now generally considered to be a part of the Manvel community. |
