Cable / Lakewood This was a farm post office established July 20, 1888 with Jesse H. Cable post master. it was located in Section 14-149-56, Loretta Township, which was named for Mrs. George Hart, the township's first white woman. The post office was discontinued July 7, 1893 with mail to Northwood. On June 23, 1900 it was reestablished two miles Northwest in SW1/4 Section 3-149-56, changing its name to Lakewood on October 17, 1903. Lakewood was the name chosen by Post Master George W Hart to note the nearby wooded shore of Hart Lake, an artificial lake built by Mr. Hart on his tree claim. The post office closed August 31, 1906 with mail to Northwood. |
