Barker's Station / New York Settlement This was a stop on the Grand Forks-Fort Totten trail in Section 6-152-56, founded in 1879 on the land of George D Barker. Settlers here were mostly from Niagara County, NY, and they called the site the "New York Settlement". In 1882 the site was relocated one mile south to the new Great Northern RR townsite of Niagara. |

Most of the settlers were from Niagara County, New York, whose name is a corruption of Ongniaahra, meaning bisected bottom lands, the Iroquois Indian settlement at the mouth of the Niagara River. The post office was established February 20, 1883 with Charles Leonard Postmaster. The elevation is 1445, the Zip Code is 58266, and the village which incorporated in 1907, reached a peak population of 207 in 1930 but has declined to just 76 in 1980. |
