Grand Forks County was established January 4, 1873, and organized March 2, 1875 with the county seat being placed in the city of Grand Forks. Both the city and the county were named to note the confluence of the Red Lake River and the Red River of the North, which early French explorers had called "Les Grandes Fourches". The area is 1,438 square miles and the population has increased with each federal census to a high of 68,100 in 1980.
