Holmes

This was a country store in SW1/4 Section 15-149-52, Union Township, nine miles WNW of Reynolds. Some say it was named for David M Holmes, who helped survey the township in 1872, while others say it was named for Holmes Wyman, the first clerk of the township. Holmes is a Teutonic name meaning son of Holman, which means from the river island. A post office was established February 13, 1886, a year after the store opened, with Lars P Hjelmstad post master. Herman Frederick Schroeder (1874-1943) bought the store 1902 and became postmaster, His son Ralph took over the duties following the elder Mr. Schroeder's death. The Post office closed January 31, 1954 with mail to Reynolds and the store closed in 1962 marking the end of an era. A population of about 25 lived at the site for many years.
