Would be interested in knowing if you have any information on my grandparents--Rees L. Phelps and Gertrude M. Phelps who lived in Steele from around 1910 to 1950-60. My grandfather was a country lawyer who did work for the NP railroad, and also ran an abstract company there. My father, Elbridge D. Phelps, while not born there was raised there from 1911 until the 1930s when he went to Jamestown College and subsequently to the U. of Michigan and moving permanently in the early 1940's. My grandparents were active in the Prebyterian Church. I believe their house was bought in the 1950s by Arie Smith. If I were there maybe I could take you to it, but the last time I was in Steele would have been the early 1950s. Thanks for any information you may have.

I am looking for information on the family of John Adam WISE. I located him (with family) in the Dakota Census 1885. He came from Pa. I am trying to find out more about the move that brought him there (to Steele). I noticed that many of the names that are surnames that married into the family are there also and that a large percent of those came from Pa. One story is that the family came with Steele - a friend from army days. Some of the family members returned to Pa, Md and Va. Others remain in ND (one is 99 this year). Several of us are trying to piece the story together. Thank you for any help. Terry Wise Vanderslice jtvandersl@aol.com

Looking for information on Mary O Lindblad who owned a boarding house in
Kidder County, Steele Township. The 1920 census shows she was the mother
of Myrtle age 19, Alice age 17, Effie age 15, Fred age 12, and Ray age
10. The census shows that Mary was 75 which would make it impossible for
Mary to be the mother of these children. Effie was my grandmother, she
remembers her mother as being very old. We think her real mother died
and the that Mary O Linblad was her grandmother. The childrens father
was John Anderson born in Sweden, changed his name to Lindblad once he
came to America. His wife we thought was Marie Oberg however, that may
not be true. They left their older children in Sweden not sure how many
there were. We know there was a set of twins. John worked for the
railroad we think the Northern Pacific. Effie (married Hamilton Bird),
Ray, and Fred later came to Minnesota. Alice went to Idaho. This family
had a very hard life, if anyone remembers or has any information please
contact myself.

Hello,
I am looking for info on my gr. grandfather Samuel W. Wilson he was born March 4, 1859 Wisconsin. And lived in Chickasaw Co., IA until after the 1900 census. And then I found him in Robinson, Kidder Co., ND from the 1910 census until the 1930 census. On the 1910 census he had a daughter Mary living with him, she was born about 1896 in Iowa? and her middle initial was either an O or a Q and she was 14. I am looking for her mothers name. I believe she was Myra Denoyles or DeNoyelles or DeNoyellas.
I would greatly appreciate any help or info I can get on this family. I am also willing to share info on this family.
Thank you,
Sincerely,
Cheryl Bateman joyofbateman@frontiernet.net

I am researching my Mother's family who settled in Kidder County.
I have the collected the following but am still missing some important pieces to their "puzzle".
I HAVE my grandfather's homestead records. I have also found them in the 1910 census which states that he owned a hardware store. As he was only two miles from Heaton and a few more from Sykeston I am thinking these are possible places for the store to exist. My aunt and uncle were both born in Sykeston.
According to the 1910 census my grandmother was born in North Dakota but according to her death certificate (she died in Saskatchewan, Canada) she was born in Denmark.
I am trying to find out the following:
- My grandmother's family - her name was Marie (or Mary) Sorensen - born in 1887, probably between the 3rd and 10th of May. I don't know any names of her family at all.
- My grandparents marriage. I don't know when or exactly where it took place. My grandfather's name was Peter Otto Kjarsgaard, born abt. July 20, 1883 in Denmark. His parents were Rasmus Kjarsgaard and Kristine Hansen. I think they probably were married sometime in the summer of 1908. A lot of my grandfather's business at the time seemed to take place in the town of Roosevelt (I'm not sure where that is) although as I said they are in Kidder County for the 1910 census and his land was located in Kidder County also.
Any help, information or direction you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Kindest Regards,

I am seeking information about my grandfather, Albert Etten, who farmed a
few miles north of Dawson, Kidder County. He, also, owned the Red Owl
Store in Dawson. The story is that he, also, established a dance pavilion
at Lake Isabel where Lawrence Welk played in the early 20's. He ,
reportedly, opened his large barn to barn dances back then, as well. I am
, especially, interested in anecdotes that anyone might have heard about
this staunch, successful, German who brought his family and wife
,Catherine Wegener-Etten, from Volo, Illinois ,in 1911. I can be reached
at mjohnson@i29.net. Thank you.

I am looking for information about EBB STEWART. He was 1/2 brother to John Henry Salter of Cavalier, ND. In John's obituary it said his brother Ebb Stewart was living in Tuttle, ND.
EBB STEWART's parents were Rev. John Stewart (1813-1904) and Margret McKay (1834-1919). They were married in 1875. They immigrated from Canada in 1880 to Cavalier, ND. They are buried near Cavalier.
EBB's birthday could be anywhere between 1875 and 1900.
I looked at the 1930 census for Tuttle city and Tuttle Township. There was a Charles Stewart. I don't know if he was related.
I also checked the web listed of Cemeteries of North Dakota - Kidder County. I didn't find any Stewarts.

I am seeking any information about my grandfather, Howard Hubbell. He lived on a farm near Tappan, which he mentions several times in his diary which was written in 1887, the year he was 13 yrs. old. I know very little about his family except that he had several siblings, one of whom was Mary. There are also references to a town called Steele. He died in l952, in Nashville, TN. where I knew him growing up. Records of the Hubbell family in ND were not well recorded. Any information would be much appreciated.

In the 1920 Census for Steele City, Kidder County, are found the family of Ole Robb 48, his wife Fannie 36, their children - Floyd 15, Bessie J. 10, Ralph W. 05, Grace 03, and Herald 01. Ole is listed as a janitor in the court house. In the 1900 Census Ole and family owned land in Sibley Butte Twp. in Burleigh County.
Did Ole and Fannie die in Kidder County, or did they move out? Ole's brother, Otis, who owned land near Ole in Section 20 of Sibley Twp. Burleigh Co., moved to the Arlington, WA area. Did any of the five children remain in the area?

I am helping my adopted daughter research her birth family. Her ancestor was Alexander Elliott McKane,
born 24 May 1897, in Steele, ND, died 27 May 1991 in Flathead Co, MT. He was the son of
Thomas Elliott McKane and Margaret Barnhouse. Alexander's WWI draft registration shows
him living in Tuttle, Kidder Co, ND, when he signed the registration on June 5, 1917. His WWI
draft card shows a "wife" as next of kin. I believe this is Elva Anna Thiesen, born 18 Feb 1901,
Spinks Co, SD, died 1 Jan 1992 in Pershing Co, NV. They had a daughter, Charlotte Margaret McKane,
born 1 Oct 1918 in Spokane, WA. Alexander E. McKane worked for the Great Northern Railroad for over 50 years.
We would appreciate any information on this McKane family. If there is someone available to do a
marriage lookup, that would be great. We think Alexander and Elva were married about 1916-1917 in Kidder County.
Thank you,
Betty and Kelly

Hello,
According to a short biography of my great-grandfather, Robert “Bob” Marlow, he and his mother, Marie Frances Monroe Marlow, and her friend Hazel Cross (who’s sons were Parsons and Richard Cross), emigrated from Dawson, North Dakota (although the bio mistakenly says S. Dakota) to Rimbey Canada in 1913.
I am hoping to find any evidence of the Marlow & Cross stay in Dawson. I would be most grateful for any information on the town at this time, or the people there.
Thank you,
Tania
