History

McKenzie County - established 8 Mar 1883 named for a somewhat notorious Bismarck politician, Alexander McKenzie (1856-1922), who was a major force in both Dakotas during his lifetime. County organized in 1905. First county seat was at what is usually called White House, near the Stroud post office. Not officially organized, so on 13 May 1905, the court house was awarded to Alexander.Residents of Schafer managed to get the county seat in 1906, but after the railroad (GNRR) decided not to build a railroad thru there to New Rockford, the townsite declined and on 1 Jun 1941 the county seat was moved to Watford City. Area is 2847 square miles - largest county in North Dakota. Highest census population was in 1930 - 9709. 1980 population - 7132 jumping nearly 1000 since 1970 because of energy development in the county.
