Benedict

This township was founded in 1906 one-half mile NW of the townsite platted by the Soo Line RR in June 1908 in NE 1/4 Sec. 13-159-81, Andrews Twp. The post office was established October 8, 1906 with Alexander Munns pm. Some sources say the name is based on the term benedict, meaning a longtime bachelor who has recently married, and applicable to many local pioneers. Others say it was named for the Order of St. Benedict to which most Roman Catholic priests in the area belonged. The Zip Code is 58716 and the village, which incorporated in 1916, reached a peak population of 195 in 1920, but has declined to just 68 in 1980.
