History
Township history from the book "McLean County Heritage" by the
 McLean County Historical Society

The name, Buffalo Rock, for the school district was chosen because of a group of buttes or mounds in this township. The mounds had deep paths around them and it is believed that the buffalo used to rub themselves on the twigs, brush and rocks that jutted out of these mounds. Section 13 and 24.

Section 31 and 32; 461 acres, were designated as Bull Pasture No.1. Here the U.S. Government kept bulls, usually Herefords, for the Indians cattle. An Indian who kept cows, could borrow one of the bulls to breed, thereby increasing his own herd and also improving his herd.

Section 30-148-89 had a very outstanding landmark. It was called Good Bear Hill. The road led down and around this very steep hill. It was a narrow road and slippery in wet weather. The Good Bear Hill was well remembered by all that had to travel that road.

Just below the hill or near it was a butte called various names. One of the more common ones was "The Wedding Cake." Another was "The Chocolate Drop." It was a very round mound of earth with straight sides. Very little grass grew on this butte. The butte could have been located in Section 36-148-90, which is the next township west. However it was so near to Good Bear Hill that it is mentioned here. The two landmarks were closely related. Much of this area is under water now.

A Congregational Church is in Section 19-148-89 and is used at the present time.
