The Dog Den Buttes are located in Sections 3, 10, 14 & 15 Butte Township. They are at the edge of the Missouri Coteau, and could be seen for miles, so made a good land mark in the early days.

The land is glacial sediment, with many sloughs and depressions.

This was a rural post office established June 30, 1890 with John E. Park pm, and named for the nearby landmark, Dogden Butte. It was located in NW 1/4 Sec. 34-150-79, Butte Twp., eight miles SW of Butte, and closed November 13, 1897 with mail to Velva. It was reestablished March 4, 1898 in McHenry County, about seven miles NNW of the original location. On February 12, 1900 it moved one mile SE to the home of new pm Frank B. Park in NW 1/4 Sec. 4-150-79, and was once again in McLean County. In 1902 it moved one mile SW to the home of pm Emma Perley in SW 1/4 Sec. 5-150-79, and changed its name to Perley on September 6, 1904. A new townsite was founded in 1906, taking the name Dogden, and the Perley post office closed in December 31, 1907 with mail to Ruso.
