Conkling This was a pioneer settlement in SE 1/4 Sec. 19-144-83, Conkling Twp., eight miles west of Washburn, named for Roscoe Conkling (1829-1888), a congressman and U.S. Senator from NY, who was very prominent at the time. The post office was established April 12, 1883 with James L. Crosley pm, and it was discontinued August 15, 1913 with mail to Washburn. A population of 25 was reported in 1890. Leslie R. Burgum, ND Attorney General 1961-1969, was born here in 1890. |
