Dogden / Butte This Soo Line RR townsite in SW 1/4 Sec. 4-150-78, Dogden Twp., was founded in 1906 as Dogden, but on January 2, 1927 the name was changed to Butte, both names noting the nearby landmark, Dogden Butte, a 2291-foot sentinel of the prairie first reported by the explorer David Thompson in 1797. The pm at the time was Mrs., Cassie Stewart, whose husband William had earlier held the position. The Zip Code is 58723, and since the name change the peak population has been 272 reported in 1950. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This Soo Line RR townsite was founded in 1906 in SW 1/4 Sec. 4-150-78, and named for the nearby landmark, Dogden Butte, which was the site of many wolf dens. Verendrye had called it Maison de Chien, or Prairie Dog's Home. The post office was established August 27, 1906 with John Schroth pm. Dogden grew quickly, reaching a peak population of 320 in 1910. On January 2, 1927 the name was changed to Butte, also in recognition of the nearby landmark. This change was generally opposed by local citizens, who liked their unusual name, but it is said that the change was mandated by postal and railroad officials who found the name to be frequently confused with Doyon. |
