Douglas This was a country store operated by Otis J. Marks in SE 1/4 Sec. 1-150-85, Douglas Twp. A post office was established in the store July 25, 1903 with Mr. Marks as pm. He named it for nearby Douglas Creek, which had been named earlier to honor a Major Douglas who was stationed at Fort Stevenson in the 1870's. The creek is now called Garrison Creek. Douglas is a Celtic name meaning dweller by the dark stream. The Soo Line RR built into this area in 1906, and on November2, 1906 the post office relocated to the new townsite one mile to the north, which put it into Ward County. |
