Max

This was a farm post office established July 13, 1904 with Paul Freitag (1873-1952) as pm, who named it for his son. Max Freitag was a Colonel in the U.S. Army who was stationed in occupied Japan after World War II. Max is a shortened form of Maximillian, a Latin name meaning the greatest. It was located in SW 1/4 Sec. 18-150-82, Economy Twp., the site of a new Soo Line RR townsite on the west bank of Elbow Lake. Railroad officials suggested the names Junction and Junction City, but local residents persuaded them to retain the name Max. It incorporated as a village in 1907, and became a city in 1947 with H.R. Freitag as first mayor. The Zip Code is 58759, and a peak population of 500 was reported in 1930. Peter D. Podhola (1876-1961), Arthur Steinhaus (1881-1950), and Gust Steinhaus (1873-1963) were prominent pioneer businessmen.
