ROBINSON /
EMMET This farm post office was established in 1903 in NW 1/4 Sec. 28-148-86, Emmet Twp., twelve miles WSW of Garrison, and named Robinson. On September 2, 1905 the name was changed to Emmet for the infant son of new pm Charles Laudenbeck, who came here in 1904. Emmet is an Anglo-Saxon name meaning ant, with the implication of diligence. In 1910 it moved one mile NW to NE 1/4 Sec. 8-148-86. A population of 3 was reported in 1930, and in the next three federal censuses the count was 100, which surely included a wide rural area around the site. The post office, Zip Code 58534, considered by many to be the last rural post office in ND, closed February 17, 1984, although government records did not record this fact until November 25, 1985. |
