Garrison Theodore and Cecil H. Taylor founded this townsite in 1902 in NW 1/4 Sec. 6-147-84, Coal Harbor Twp., and named it for nearby Garrison Creek, which had been named in 1864 to note the troops of Fort Berthold garrisoned on its banks. The post office was established January 17, 1903 with Cecil H. Taylor pm. In 1905 it was moved five miles NNE to the new Soo Line RR townsite in SW 1/4 Sec. 8-148-84, Garrison Twp., on land originally owned by Andreas Pankratz (1848-1917). It incorporated as a village in 1907, and became a city in 1916 with Otis F. McGray as mayor. The Zip Code is 58540, and the peak population of 1,890 was reached in 1950. It is about twelve miles north of the giant Missouri River dam that uses this name. The original site, called Old Garrison after 1905 is now inundated by Lake Sakakawea. |
