Hiddenwood This was a pioneer rural settlement on the south shore of Hiddenwoods Lake, named by early settlers to describe a grove of native trees there. It was located primarily in NW 1/4 Sec. 3-150-87, Gate Twp., about seven miles NNE of Roseglen. The post office was established June 11, 1903 with William W. Wright pm, and closed August 14, 1909 with mail to Ryder. An annual picnic was first held in 1903, a tradition that far outlived the settlement. Old Settlers' Picnics are still held here, a replica sod house has been built, and the site is known as "The Whist Capital of North Dakota." The name is perpetuated by the Hiddenwood National Wildlife Refuge nearby. Hiddenwoods is an erroneous but commonly found spelling. |
