Roseglen Settlers arrived here about 1902 and got their mail from Oscar. On March 16, 1904 a post office was established in the home of pm Johannes "John" H. Snippen (1880-1960)in NW 1/4 Sec. 13-149-87, Roseglen Twp. Mr. Snippen submitted Glennon, Glenwood, Hill, Kolden, Rostad, Shea and Snippen as suggested names to postal officials and all were rejected. He then combined "Rose" inspired from a seed catalog, and "Glen", from his neighbors, Patrick and Mike Glennon, who were the area's first settlers, and Roseglen was accepted as the name. When new land was opened to settlement by whites in 1916, the post office moved four miles ESE to the platted townsite called Batesville in Sec. 5-149-87. An expected railroad never came, but the village continues to exist with a population of about 50, and the post office, Zip code 58775, still operates. |
