Turtle Valley This was a popular stopping point on the trail between Bismark and Fort Stevenson in the 1870's. It was located in Sec. 30-144-81, Satterlund Twp., just SE of present-day Washburn, and was the home of George Grafton Rhude (1849-1920), the first white settler in McLean County. The post office was established October 31, 1874 with Mr. Rhude as pm, who named it for the valley in which it was located, and closed September 4, 1882 when Mr. Rhude became pm at the new townsite of Washburn. He served in that position only until October 19, 1882, when John S. Veeder became the pm. |
