Chitutah

This was a rural post office established January 25, 1886 with Ollie M. Hudson pm. It was located in Sec. 23-146-82, Underwood Twp., two miles east of Underwood, and named for nearby Coal Lake, which the Indians called Chitutah, meaning coal. The post office closed June 1, 1887 with the entry "no papers" in the records. It is said to have never sent or received a single piece of mail.

This Soo Line RR townsite was founded in 1903 in Secs. 20 & 21-146-82, Underwood Twp., and named for Fred D. Underwood, Soo Line RR Vice President, who lived at the time in Enderlin. He later moved back east and served as president of the Erie RR, The town was platted in July 1903, and the post office opened August 10, 1903 with Rose A. Ward pm. The village incorporated in 1908, the Zip Code is 58576, and the population reached a peak of 1,343 in 1980 as a result of the boom in the energy industry. The well known artist and religious leader, Clell G. Gannon, was raised here.
