Ingersoll This was a rural community in Sec. 20-146-81, Veeder Twp., seven miles ESE of Underwood, and named for Col. Robert Green Ingersoll (1833-1899), a Civil War veteran, lawyer, and agnostic lecturer. The name was chosen by John P. Lendeleaf, who came here in March 1883 from Rantoul, IL, and was an admirer of Col. Ingersoll. The post office was established December 4, 1883 with Mr. Lindeleaf pm, and a school was built in 1884. On October 27, 1887 the post office was moved one mile SE to the home of pm John O. Fjaerli in SE 1/4 Sec. 28-146-81. Col. Ingersoll died July 21, 1899, and on that date a tornado struck this site, turning the school on its foundation. The tale was later featured in a column of "Ripley's Believe It or Not". The post office closed September 14, 1905 with mail to Underwood. |
