Twenty-two cemeteries from a GNIS search are listed below. The cemetery name links to National Mapping Information for the cemetery which includes links to Topozone, TerraServer and the U.S. Census Bureau's Tiger Map Server. However, there are a number of other cemeteries scattered around the county not named here. These will be listed when I become aware of them. [Hint: If you have information on a cemetery not listed here or additional information on those that are listed, please email me. Difficulty in finding recorded gravesites may be due to the fact that burial plot purchases were often not registered with the county register of deeds, but rather, as was related to me, receipts were just taken home and put away. If graves were not marked with gravestones it is nearly impossible to find them today. Since the 1960s cemeteries in North Dakota have been required to register a plot map (no names) with the register of deeds. Each board of trustees sets their own fees and regulations. Burial permits are filed with the court house and death certificates are filed with the state by the mortician. Early burial records are usually in the church funeral records. Some early death data can be obtained from obituary columns recorded on film and available from the ND State Historical Society in Bismark. These films can be obtained on interlibrary loan.
