A law requiring registration of births and deaths was enacted in 1893 but repealed in 1895, then reenacted in 1899. However, the law was not well-complied with in the early years and registration was not considered complete until 1923.

ROLETTE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Rolette County Historical Society was founded and chartered in May 1974. They meet the first Sunday of every month in St. John. The summer meetings are held at the Museum site and the winter meetings are held at the café.

MUSEUM LOCATION, HIGHLIGHTS AND FUTURE PROJECTS:

The museum is located on Main Street in St. John. Historic buildings located at the site are the Mill Lake Church, the Kuhl School (a one-room school house once located in Hutchinson Township) and Dana Wright’s trail cabin which was restored by the Historical Society after it was moved from its original location at Dion Lake in the Turtle Mountains.

The Historical Society is currently restoring the last remaining Martineau house that was built in 1899.

They have plans to move a building to the museum site that will be used as a pioneer blacksmith shop.

MEMBERSHIP DUES:

Annual dues are $5.00 per person
