Wallace K. McNamee, 84, Hood River, OR, formerly Fargo, ND and Billings, MT, died June 9, 2000, in Desert Hot Springs, CA. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Detroit Lakes, MN.
Wallace Kohler McNamee was born Jan 29, 1916, the ninth child of James and Anna (Kohler) McNamee in Hillsboro, ND. Wally, as he was known to friends and family, graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1933, where he was a four-sport athlete and an all-state football player. As a young man, he attended the University of North Dakota, served in Army National Guard and was a Golden Gloves boxer.
He married Ethel Hausman, also of Hillsboro, Jan 20, 1938. They lived in Grand Forks, ND. and Fargo, where Wally was the general superintendent of several road construction companies: Butler Construction, William Collins and Son and Meyer Construction. His main interest was his family, and he was an active hunter, fisherman and downhill skier. A long-time sports fan, he also spent many years in the bleachers watching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Wally was a life-long member of the Elks Lodge, Knights of Columbus, Church of the Nativity Catholic Church in Fargo, and St. Mary's of the Lakes, Detroit Lakes.
He is survgived by his wife; three daughters, Toni Nippolt, Hood River, OR; Beth (John) Fox, Stevensville, MT; Mary McNamee Billings, MT; son, Wally (Linda) McNamee, Billings, MT, son-in-law Gary (Roberta) Woodcock, Minneapolis, MN; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Roberta “Bobbie” Woodcock.

Ida Mergenthal, 86, died December 28, 1976, at Hillsboro Community Hospital.
She was born July 18, 1890, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Mergenthal, Sr. and grew up on the farm of her parents, northeast of Hillsboro, in Eldorado Township. She received her RN at St. Ansgar Hospital in Moorhead, and nursed in Ada, for many years, retiring in Hillsboro about ten years ago.
She leaves to mourn her death a sister-in-law, Mrs. John Mergenthal, Jr., one nephew and five nieces: Mrs. Ted, Mildred, Emmett, Tacoma, Washington; Mrs. Bill, Adeline, Buske, Rolfe, Iowa; Mrs. Fred, Ruth, Bruecker, Gardena, California; Mrs. Howard, Irene, Johnson, Norwalk, California; Mrs. C.I., Betty, Anderson, Hemett, California; and John Otto, Chicago, Illinois.
Burial was in Immanuel Cemetery. Arrangements by Wildeman Funeral Home.

4 May 1945 Pioneer Hillsboro Resident, Farmer Succumbs at Home Funeral Held on Monday
John F. Mergenthal, 85, well known and respected farmer of the Hillsboro area since 1880 and resident of this city since 1918, died Thursday evening at home here.
He had not been in the best of health for several years but suffered a marked turn a few weeks ago, being afflicted with uremic poisoning and old age complications.
Funeral services were held on Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. T.N. Teigen officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Wm. F. Schultz, Wm. Zimmerman, Wm. Weber, J.E. Rode, Julius Henka and Jens Letnes.
Johann Ferdinand Heinrich Mergenthal was born December 6, 1859 in Hammar, Kreis Karmin, Prussia his parents being Fred Mergenthal and Caroline Kruppke. He was baptized and confirmed there and came to America in 1880, settling in this neighborhood and joining Immanuel Lutheran Church the same year.
He married Elizabeth Bollinger September 30, 1888. The couple moved to Hillsboro in 1918. Mrs. Mergenthal died in 1933 and in later years Mr. Mergenthal has been cared for by his daughter, Ida.
Survivors are three daughters Mrs. Fred Otto of Ladysmith, Wisc., Mrs. Ed Engel of Los Angeles, Calif., and Ida Mergenthal at home; a son John of Hillsboro; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Another son, Carl died in infancy.
Attend Mergenthal Funeral: Mr. and Mrs. Edward Schmaltz of Grand Forks were here Monday for the John Mergenthal funeral.

Services were held Monday in Hillsboro Immanuel Lutheran church for John Mergenthal, 85 years old, pioneer resident who died last week. Coming to Hillsboro in 1880, Mr. Mergenthal farmed until he retired in 1918. Mrs. H.F. Schroeder, Mrs. Edward Anderson and Elroy H. Schroeder of Grand Forks, nieces and nephew of Mr. Mergenthal, attended the funeral. Survivors include three daughters Mrs. Fred Otto, Little Spings, Wisc., Mrs. Ed Engel, Los Angeles, Calif., Ida, Hillsboro and one son, John of Hillsboro.

5 June 1969 Services Held Wednesday
Funeral services for John A. Mergenthal, 74, a lifetime resident of the Hillsboro area, were held Wednesday afternoon at Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
Mr. Mergenthal died Saturday, May 31, 1969 in the Community Hospital after a short illness.
He was born September 15, 1894 at Hillsboro. December 19, 1917 he was married to Laura Goshinska at Moorhead.
Mr. Mergenthal, who had farmed east of Hillsboro, was retired and lived in town. He was an Eldorado Township Supervisor for 25 years and served on the board of the Taft Farmers Elevator for many years.
Survivors include his wife and two sisters, Mrs. Edwin (Emma Engel) Montebello, Calif., and Ida, Hillsboro.
Officiating at the service was Rev. C.F. Savereide. Organist was Mrs. Herbert Anderson and soloist Mrs. Gene Carr.
Pallbearers were Alfred Overmoe, Herman Koering, Lloyd Weber, Gary Euren, Ed Ellingson and Nels Brakke. Interment was in the Immanual Lutheran Cemetery, east of Hillsboro.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Zoar Lutheran Church here for Mrs. Erick Ovrid, 85, pioneer who died Saturday at Northwood. Rev. Paul Blikstad and Rev. S. H. Njaa will officiate at the service. Burial will be made in Zoar cemetery. Mrs. Orvid was one of the last pioneers of the area. She was born July 19, 1872, the daughter of the late Torger and Gertrude Michelson. She moved with her parents to Nelson County in a covered wagon. The family settled near the present townsite of McVille. They were the first settlers to arrive in the community and 1880 built the first log house, which is not a historic site in the McVille Park.
Later she moved to Hatton and in 1892 was married to Erick Ovrid. They farmed west of Hatton for several years and after Mr. Orvid died May 22, 1940, Mrs. Ovrid and daughter Hazel moved to Hatton where they resided until the daughter's death May 6, 1957, when Mrs. Orvid moved to the Northwood Rest Home.
She was a charter member of the Zoar Ladies Aid and served in various offices of the organization. She was preceded in death by two daughters Hazel and Evelyn, a son and her husband. Survivors are two sons Elmer, Seattle, and Theordore, Van Nuys, Calif.; two daughter Mrs. Sidney Paulson, Grand Forks and Mrs. Clarence Kamphaugh, Hatton; a brother Edward Michelson at Erskine, Minn; 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Active pallbearers will be Rufus Kamphaugh, Corliss Swenson, Wendell Ostlie, Adloph Ostlie, C.A. Thompson, and Gilmen Bjertness. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. A.A. Kjelland, Nels Lyste, Ostvik Norum, H.M. Nash, O.M. Burud, Bennie Pladson, Oliver Pladson, Carl A. Bye, John L. Thompson, Geo. Brunsvold, Harry Anderson, Ole Heskin and Oliver Bjerke.
