Harrison
This was a pioneer settlement which
soon became an annexed part of the city of Minot. The name is credited to
T.E. Olsgard, the Register of the U.S. Land Office, who chose to honor the
then current President of the United States, Benjamin Harrison
(1833-1901). The name is perpetuated by the township (155-83) in which
most of Minot is located. |
| Minot
This Great Northern Railroad
townsite was founded in 1886 and became known as "The Magic City" because
of its rapid growth, quickly covering most of Harrison Township (155-83).
It was named for Henry Davis Minot (1859-1890), a director of the GNRR who
was killed in a train wreck. The post office was established February 12,
1887 with Patrick H. McNamara Postmaster. It incorporated as a city in
1887, replaced Burlington as the county seat of Ward County in 1888, and
has grown steadily to a peak population of 32,886 in 1980. The elevation
is 1566, the Zip Code is 58701, and it is the site of Minot State
University. It pronunciation of this city's name is My-Knot. |

Gassman
This was a Great Northern Rail Road
station built in 1883 in Section 19-155-83, Harrison Township, five miles
west of Minot, and named for Henry C. Gassman (1856-1938), a native of
Wisconsin who was the first settler in Gassman Coulee. A small coal mine
settlement developed here about 1915, but it disappeared by 1940. |
