This was a coal mining settlement in SE1/4 Section 4-157-83, Waterford Township, fifteen miles NNW of Minot near the Renville County line. A post office was established June 22, 1903 with William H. Rouse postmaster, and it closed June 30, 1908 with mail to Lynch. The origin of the name, which is a diminutive of Wainwright, an Old English name meaning wagon maker, is unknown.
