1999 My name is Gurmen S. Schimke. I was raised in Bowdon. My father's name was
Solomon and my Mother's name was Leah (Hartman). I have about completed the
family history on the Schimke side. However, material on the Bich family
remains quite sketchy. My grandmother's name was Salme (Bich). She was married
to my grandfather John Schimke. They farmed south of Heaton in the late 20's
and early 30's. They moved to Washington and later California during the
depression. I believe my maternal great grandfather's name was Jacob. Great
grandmother's name was Justina (Knopp) and her parents were Peter Knopp and
Rosia (Gross). I believe both families migrated through Ellendale from Russia.
John and Salme were married there and latter farmed in the area between Kulm
and Ellendale. Information on the Schimke side is quite complete from the
court house in Ellendale, the State Historical Society, and from an uncle and
aunt that still survive. However, I haven't been able to trace the Bich family
in North Dakota. Any help you might be able to offer will be greatly

homesteaded. My Aunt has given me the name of a town that I can't find. Maybe
it isn't spelled correctly or maybe it no longer exists. It was supposed to be

he married my grandmother and they farmed there. Can anyone give me a clue

Cooke Sun 10 Sep 2000 I'm attempting to find out a little more about the brother of my Great
Grandfather, William Ernest Cooke (1862 - 1941). He was one of the founders of
Harvey, Wells Co, ND. 1/ In particular, is it possible to get a transcription
of W.E. Cooke's obituary from a local newspaper, (according to my records his
date of death is 29 Jan 1941.) ? (Some family notes state that he died 29 Jan
1946 instead of 1941.) 2/ This next request is much more work and may not be
appropriate to ask. Anyways, was the obituary of his wife, Eliza Krueger
(1872-1968), listed in any local newspapers ? (date of death was sometime in
1968, she was ~96 years old) 3/ Did WE Cooke and his wife Eliza Krueger have
any children ? I'm willing to share the info that I have. Thank you in advance
for your help -- Brian (Brian E. Cooke brother of WE Cooke Jr: Son of WE
Cooke, Grandson of WE Cooke Sr. Great Grandson of Arthur Cooke who was the

2001 I'm in search of my great great grandfather's (Lambert Schaefer) death
certificate. I was lead to believe that he died in Goodhue County, Minnesota,
but I never was able to find a death certificate in either Wabasha County or
Goodhue. Then about a week ago, I came across him in the 1920 Harvey, Wells
Co., ND census. He was living with his son, Lambert I. Schaefer, and his
family. Lambert I. was in Harvey working for the railroad at the time. Lambert
Sr. supposedly died May 3, 1920. Would anyone have a chance to glance for a
death notice for Lambert in either a newspaper or county records? It would be
much appreciated. His wife's death certificate is just as elusive, but I'm
pretty sure that they were not living in North Dakota at the time of her death
since she showed up in the 1905 Census in Minnesota shortly before her death.

of Heinrich and Susanna N. Prom. He was married twice, once to Maria Anna

30 Mar 2003 I am looking for any information on the immigration of the Thomas family
from Russia. They are listed in the 1910 census for Harvey City, Wells
Township. Before that I can not find where they entered the United States
from. Family history says Odessa, Russia (Prussia?) and that they were German
Farmers. They are Wilhelm & Elizabeth Thomas, children Agnes Katherine,
Gertrude, Othelia, Evaline & Martin. They are my great-grandparents.
Elizabeth's maiden name was Scheett born on 2-19-1882 in Russia and would have
immigrated with her parents? around 1895. Her mother was Gertrude Katz thought
to be Jewish. Any relations to these families would be helpful. thanks Christa

Seglsten Wed 2 Apr 2003 I'm searching for information of what happened to the Bagstad/Jorgenson
family that lived at Pony Gulch between ca. 1895 and 1910-20. John (Johannes)
Jorgenson Bagstad came to Wells county in 1892 and was followed by his wife
Agnete Jorgenson Bagstad and their six kids in 1893: Anna (born 1877), Sina
(1879), John (1882), Thea (1885), Ingvald (1888) and Christian (1891). Later
they got Julius (1894) and Clara (1897). In the 1900 census I find the family
(without Anna and Sina) living near Agnethes half brothers, John Thompson
(Tostensen) with family and Simon Thompson (Thostensen) single. In the 1910
census I find John, Agneta, Julius and Clara living next to John Thompson
(Simon returned to Norway in 1907). In the 1920 census both John Jorgenson
Bagstad (and his family) and John Thompson (with family) seem to have left
Pony Gulch. Agnete's full brother, Hans Thostenson Brovoll, lived in Mayville
Traill county. On page 120 in the vol 29 of Cemeteries in North Dakota, Wells
county one John Jorgenson Bagstad and one Julius Jorgenson should be listed
(can anyone do a look up?) and on page 20 a Clara Jorgenson is supposed to be
listed (a look up would be appriciated a lot!). So i suppose some of the
family died in Wells before moving - if they did move. Does anybody know what
happened to the family? kind regards Per Helge Seglsten, Oslo, Norway

2002 My husband, deceased, parents were married and lived in Fessenden Wells
County North Dakota. I am doing research for my two sons on their fathers
line. I know his mother's parents names and that they were born in Wisconsin.
I also know the father was born in Minnesota and his exact date of birth. But
what I would like to know is how would I go about getting a copy of the
marriage license to see if it would show the father's parents names. They
moved to Minnesota but they were both born in New YOrk. I don't know the date
of the marriage. But I know the age of the oldest daughter. How expensive is
it for someone to do a look up with this information.

21 Jan 2005 In Spokesfield's book "The History of Wells Country and it's Pioneers" I'm
told there is mention of Henry Mettis Mathis [son of E. Frank Mathis, a
pioneer of Cathay, ND], his wife and 3 children drowning in a flood in
California in February 1928. Does anyone know where Henry Mettis Mathis [my
cousin] may have been living in California and what flood the book is
referring to?? I have been unable to locate any information in California
other than the failure of the San Francisquito Dam which killed a number of
people. I have the feeling that the Mathises were living in the San Francisco
area. But there is a note in the old Mathis Bible that Henry's father, E.
Frank Mathis, died in 1920 [and it's hard to read] but I believe it states
L.A.[Los Angeles?]. So perhaps, they were all in the Los Angeles, CA area
which is where the San Francisquito Dam was located. Does anyone know how I'd
access a list of the people who were killed in the San Francisquito Dam
disaster?? Please feel free to write to me at P.O. Box 9338, Cedarpines Park,

2006 I am looking for any clues on the Wacker family (during the early 1900's it
looks like some of the family changed the spelling to Walker). I have
information indicating at least Lillie Lydia Wacker was born in Wells County 2
Sep 1910 in Fessenden. I'm suspecting she is kin to my R. J. Wacker. I know so
little about him. I have a clue indicating he was pastor of the Congregational
Church in Fairfax, SD around 1920 and that he returned to North Dakota after
that. I have his children as Roland, Florence, Eleanor, Daughter 3 and Erwin
Frederick Gerald (b. abt 1906). Erwin is my Uncle (he never changed the
spelling of Wacker). Erwin married Clara Gall of Fairfax (suspect he got
acquainted with Clara while his dad preached in Fairfax). They had two
daughters, Marj and Audrey. Any clues or direction would be appreciated. Joe

Feb 2006 I am trying to find any information about the Schmidtke families of Wells
and nearby counties. There was an August Schmidtke. His wife, I think
Wilhelmina. They came aboard the Carrington, and probably spoke very little
English at first. I think the mother of the older children was Justine Briska,
but she apparently died in the old country, and so he married Wilhekmina
Hildenbrandt. The spellings were probably more Germanic, but once they got to
the USA, it appears they were simplified to make them more American. Bob
