Ravenna
Genealogical & Historical Society

The RGHS considers itself in both Buffalo and Sherman Counties as Ravenna is only 1 mile south of the Sherman County line.  Its area covers the Ravenna School District which includes the areas of Poole, Majors, Sartoria, Hayestown, Sodtown, Nantasket, Hazard, Sweetwater, St Michael, South Ravenna and the short-time post offices of Paris, Berg, Waters, and Waltham.

The Society does not compete with the Sherman County Historical Society Museum in Loup City, nor the Trails and Rails Museum of the Buffalo County Historical Society in Kearney.  The goal is to have a research center for the area, not a museum.  We collect pictures, family histories and memories of area life.

A card file of the births, marriages, and deaths that have been extracted from the Ravenna News (1888 to 1920) is in the Ravenna Historical Center at 208 Grand Ave, Ravenna.

We also hold about 500 pictures of the area, and have the Ravenna Historical Center at 208 Grand Ave, Ravenna, open every Friday 10 AM to 3 PM.

The Society has published three books:

  • The Ravenna Centennial: 1886-1986 (out of print)
  • Memories---Ravenna Businesses to 1986 ($12.00)
  • Pictorial History of Ravenna ($12.00)
The last two books are for sale by mail with $2.50 postage per book.  A member has compiled the births, marriages, and deaths of the area and these nine volumes are for sale at the Nebraska Genealogical Society.

Our present project is "Sokol:  Czech Gymnastics" telling the story about how Ravenna won a Sokol tournament in 1910.

Booklets commemorating the Nebraska Historical Roadside Markers erected by the Society are available at:
Ravenna GHS,
P.O. Box 33,

Postage cost is $1.50 per book.
  • Fort Banishment: U.S.Army Post South Fork ($2.95)
  • Civilian Conservation Corps: Ravenna Camp companies 2741 and 2732, 1934-1939 ($3.95)

MEMBERSHIP in the Ravenna GHS is $5.00 per person, and $7.50 per family per year.  We will do limited research on a time available basis.  Contributions for this service are appreciated. For more information, write to Marty Russell.
