This
collection of photographs are from an album created by Rolland H.
Smith, Architect, Engineer and Construction Contractor of Lincoln,
Nebraska in 1928.
Scanned and Submitted to the Dawes County NEGenWeb Project by
Phyllis S. Stevens, daughter of Rolland H. Smith
The
photographs on this page were taken by Rolland H. Smith in 1928. His
daughter, Phyllis S. Stevens assumes that he was in Chadron for the
dedication of the Chadron Hospital and that he may have stayed with
the Kieffe family as she does not find a reference to this surname
in her family tree.
Rolland and his father, John R. Smith, were architects and
construction contractors under the name of "J.R. Smith & Son,
Architects & Engineers, Publishers of the Building Cost Calculator,
Lincoln, Nebraska." Their work included churches in which Phyllis
has a portfolio of this work during the late 1910s and 20s and
commercial buildings and residences.
Rolland and his wife, Clarissa (Bucklin) and their daughter
Phyllis went to the Washington, DC area in 1940 to be a draftsman on
the Pentagon. At the completeion of that job they moved to
Pennsyvania to a suburb of Philidelphia where Phyllis graduated from
High School. Rolland and Clarissa had two more daughters who also
grew up in Broomall, PA. Rolland died in 1982. During his time in
the Philadephia area he was a draftsman/engineer on battleships,
helicopeters, shipborard cranes and other mechanical projects.
John
R. Smith left the Lincoln, Nebraska area during WWII and traveled
selling his "Building Cost Calculator" around the country. He pent
his last years in Denver, Colorado with his daughter, Florence
Hollingworth, and died in 1957.
