Legal description as located in "The Frontier County Rural Resident Directory: Southwest corner of SW 1/4, Section 26, Township 5, Range 27, Knowles Precinct, Frontier County, Nebraska. Mount Zion Methodist Church was just 1 3/4 miles south of the pioneer village of Freedom, Frontier County, Nebraska. Today if you do not know the place you would see nothing to show that a village was once on this site. I have been told that my Grandfather Samuel Robert WYMORE gave the village its name. He came to Frontier County from Liberty, Gage County, Nebraska. He said, "We have a Liberty, Nebraska, let's also have a Freedom, Nebraska." This met the approval of the community.

"As a girl I can remember Freedom in the late 1930's and early 1940's. It then consisted of a General Store and Post Office, in one large building, with gas pumps in front. There was another building which was the City Hall, but was not used much at this time. It was occupied by Frank R. VERNAM & family, his wife had died some years before and some of his children had never married and lived at home. After Mr. VERNAM passed away, the store and Post Office were closed and all the buildings were torn down or moved away. About 3/4 mile south was the schoolhouse on the west side of the road. Today there was a windmill and broken foundation. On the east side of the road, about a mile south of the school is the Mount Zion Church and Cemetery. The Church has not been used for several years and is in need of rebuilding if it is to survive.

Grandfather Samuel WYMORE homesteaded in the Freedom community and lived there for several years. (see the homestead deed in his papers) Then he moved to a farm over on the Medicine Creek to the northeast. Grandfather and Grandmother lived there 'til they retired to Bartley, Red Willow County, Nebraska in 1925. Today, my husband John Richard HEAGNEY and I copied the information on the tombstones in Mount Zion Cemetery."
