| HEART ATTACK IS FATAL TO D. R. CASS
D R Cass, 53 Burwell earthmoving contractor passed away Monday evening
of this week, December 17th about 11:00 o’clock after having suffered a
severe heart attack earlier in the evening.
Mr Cass went to the Malicky Service Station just across the street from
his home in Burwell after he had eaten supper, and shortly after arriving
at the station suffered the attack. He was taken immediately by the emergency
unit to the Burwell hospital, where he passed away at the above time.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Methodist church in Burwell
at 2:00 pm Thursday afternoon, with the Rev A J Hindmand in charge. Interment
will be made in the Burwell cemetery.
Mr Cass was in the earth moving contracting business, and had some
very fine projects in this territory, which showed the high quality of
workmanship.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; and four daughters, Mrs Marilyn (Kenneth)
Hoffa, of National City, California, Mrs Yvonne (Charles) Dearmont of Burwell,
Mrs Shirley (Ray) Lalicker of Burwell, and Mrs Linda (Keith) Pelton of
Beatrice, Nebraska.
FUNERAL SERVICES FOR DONALD R. CASS CONDUCTED DEC 20
Funeral services for the late Donald R Cass were conducted from the
Methodist Church in Burwell, Thursday, December 20th with Rev A J Hindmand
and Mr Dean Donner officiating. The selections "Sometime We’ll Understand"
and "Face to Face" were sung by Shirley Johnson and Marjorie Goff, Mrs
Sally Edghill, accompanist. Pall bearers were Willard Johnson, Marvin Malicky,
Eldon Dent, Howard Paulsen, Marvin Donner, and Thomas Meuret. Jr. Military
rites were conducted by Clifford Clark Post No 298, Interment was made
in Cottonwood Cemetery, Burwell, Nebr.
OBITUARY
Donald Ray (Spud) Cass, son of Henry D and Hattie Cass was Born February
17,1909 at Burwell, Nebraska, and departed from this life December 17,
1962 at Burwell Memorial Hospital at the age of 53 years and 10 months.
He grew to manhood on his father’s ranch north of Burwell. In his youth
he was baptized into Christ at the Christian Church in Burwell. From childhood
he had a deep rooted love for powerful machinery, which remained with him
thruout his life and this led him to choose his life’s work in the construction
field which in turn took him to many different localities.
On December 27,1934 he was united in marriage to Doris Chaffin. To this
union four children were Born; Marilyn, Yvonne, Shirley and Linda.
They moved to California in 1941 and remained there until he entered
the Navy in the spring of 1944. In the Navy he was on ship repair and also
amphibious forces. He spent several months on Okinawa.
On release from the Navy in the fall of 1945 he again turned to his
favored vocation and developed his conservation contracting business.
He was a member of the Burwell Wrangler’s Club, IOOF , the VFW and the
40 et 8. He too was a past commander of the American Legion.
He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Lewis and Clarence.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Doris, his four daughters,
Marilyn Hoffa of San Diego, California, Yvonne Dearmont, Shirley Lalicker
of Burwell, and Linda Pelton of Beatrice. Four sons-in-law, seven grandchildren,
and six sisters, Vernon Butcher of Annandale, Virginia, Vista Kendall,
Omaha, Belva Lowery, Burwell; Mabel Procter, Freeport, Michigan; Eva Benton,
Lexington, Nebraska; Dorothy Lewis, Istanbul, Turkey; and a host of other
relatives and friends.
His aptitude for doing things with his hands was miraculous as it ranged
from making music on improvised instruments to the repair and operation
of equipment ranging in size from a broken toy to a bulldozer .
His infectious sense of humor, which brought joy to so many, will be
greatly missed by his family and friends. |
