JEFFERSON DEWITT VAN PELT FAMILY
            Jefferson DeWitt Van Pelt, son of Jacob Van Pelt and Sophia Chapin, was born in Columbia Township, Meigs County, Ohio 19 January 1845.  Jefferson died 15 October 1914 at 69 years of age.  He was buried in the Central City Cemetery, Central City, Merrick County, Nebraska.

            He married Mary M Burley in Meigs County, Ohio 06 January 1866 or 25 February 1867.  Mary was born in Athens County, Ohio 26 September 1845.  She was the daughter of John Burley and Ruby Gates.  Mary died 22 May 1919 (see obituary-under newspapers) Archer, Merrick County, Nebraska at 73 years of age.  She was buried in the Central City Cemetery, Central City, Merrick County, Nebraska.

            Jefferson Van Pelt was the grandson of Aaron Van Pelt.  Aaron Van Pelt was born 02 June 1781 in New York.  Aaron died 02 September 1863 in Meigs County, Ohio, at 82 years of age.  He was buried in the Follrod-Keebaugh Cemetery, Orange Township, Meigs County, Ohio.  He married Elizabeth Gilliland in Cranbury Township, Middlesex, New Jersey 04 September 1808.  Elizabeth was born 10 December 1786 in New York to Daniel Gilliland and Mary Parden (Pardum).  Elizabeth died 10 September 1870 in Meigs County, Ohio, at 83 years of age.  She was buried in the Follrod-Keebaugh Cemetery, Orange Township, Meigs County, Ohio.

            Aaron and Elizabeth had the following children:

  1. Maria Van Pelt was born 28 February 1809.
  2. Jacob Van Pelt was born 1812.
  3. Eliza Ann Van Pelt was born 26 September 1812.
  4. Daniel Van Pelt was born 31 August 1814.
  5. Catharine Van Pelt was born 02 November 1815.
  6. July Ann Van Pelt was born in New York ABT 1818.
  7. Susan Van Pelt was born 07 May 1820.
  8. Charlotte Van Pelt was born 01 September 1821.
  9. Aaron Van Pelt was born 17 July 1823.
  10. Patience Van Pelt was born 20 February 1827.

       Jefferson D. Van Pelt brought his family to Nebraska from Ohio in 1879.  He had made previous trips and had a sod house ready for them on a homestead, 3 miles north and 1 mile west of the present day site of Archer.  The census of 09 June 1885 lists Jefferson as the Head of Household in Midland Precinct, Merrick County, Nebraska. 
Jefferson DeWitt Van Pelt and Mary M Burley had the following children:

  1. Mayo Van Pelt was born in Athens Co. Ohio 02 February 1868.  Mayo died 28 May 1933 at 65 years of age.  He was buried in the Central City Cemetery, Central City, Merrick County, Nebraska.  He married Nora M Eckles 18 March 1891. Nora was born in Illinois 13 January 1872 to Alford Eckles and Sarah J (Robb) Eckles.  Nora died 06 August 1964 at 92 years of age.  She was buried in the Central City Cemetery, Central City, Merrick County, Nebraska.  Both of Nora’s parents were born in Pennsylvania.

    In the 1900 and 1930 Census, Mayo was listed as the Head of Household in Midland Township, Merrick County, Nebraska.  On 20 February 2000, I asked Leonard DeWitt Van Pelt, son of Mayo Van Pelt, where his father got his name.  Leonard said that his dad was named after the Mayo Clinic in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
  2. Milo Van Pelt was born in Athens Co. Ohio 08 March 1870.  Milo died 30 May 1960 in Palmer, Merrick County, Nebraska, at 90 years of age.  He was buried in the Central City Cemetery, Central City, Merrick County, Nebraska.  He married Zora May Badgley in Palmer, Merrick County, Nebraska 15 May 1904.  Zora was born in Butler County, Nebraska 05 May 1884.  Zora was the daughter of Calvin Absalom Badgley and Rachel E Sherwood.  She married Emory E Snyder BEF 1901.  Zora had 2 children from this marriage:  Hazel and Ogle.  Zora died 11 May 1962 in Merrick County, Nebraska at 78 years of age.  She was buried in the Central City Cemetery, Central City, Merrick County, Nebraska.

    In the 1900, 1920 and 1930 Census, Milo was listed as the Head of Household in Midland Township, Merrick County, Nebraska. 
  3. Sophia Van Pelt was born in Athens Co. Ohio 11 June 1872.  Sophia died 21 November 1959 at 87 years of age.  She was buried 24 November 1959 in the Burke (Fairview) Cemetery (near Highway 92 and 14), Merrick County, Nebraska.  She married twice.  She married Adolph Nitzel 18 March 1891.  Adolph was born in Sandwich, DeKalb County, Illinois 16 November 1864.  Adolph was the son of Henry Nitzel and Christina Immel.  Adolph died 09 June 1924 in Merrick County, Nebraska, at 59 years of age.  Aldolph is buried in the Burke (Fairview) Cemetery.  She married Clarence Newlon in December 30, 1937 in Lincoln, Lancaster Co. NE.  Clarence died in 27 January 1950.
  4. John B Van Pelt was born in Athens Co. Ohio 04 May 1876.  John died 29 January 1929 at 52 years of age.  He was buried in the Central City Cemetery, Central City, Merrick County, Nebraska.  He married twice.  He married Malinda J Davis 06 January 1897 in Newman Township, Nance Co. NE.  They were divorced by 1916.  He married Alice Winifred Brittin in Archer, Merrick County, Nebraska, 12 February 1916.  Alice was born in Minnesota 1885.  Alice was the daughter of George J Secoy and Annie L Bickford.  Alice died in 1919 at 34 years of age. 
  5. Ionia Van Pelt was born in Athens Co. Ohio 10 October 1878.  Ionia died August 1959 at 80 years of age.  She married William O Trebilcock in Archer, Merrick County, Nebraska, 06 June 1897.  William was the son of James W Trebilcock and Mary Burge.
  6. Jesse DeCecil Van Pelt was born in Nebraska 18 August 1885.  Jesse died in Aurora, Hamilton County, Nebraska 17 November 1959 at 74 years of age.  He was buried 20 November 1959 in the Central City Cemetery, Central City, Merrick County, Nebraska.  He married Leola F Leisure Crawford 27 November 1907.  Leola was born in Nebraska 16 May 1889.  Leola died 18 May 1966 at 77 years of age.  She was buried in the Central City Cemetery, Central City, Merrick County, Nebraska.

    In the 1920 Census, Jesse was listed as the Head of Household in Midland Township, Merrick County, Nebraska.

Mayo Van Pelt and Nora Eckles had the following children:

  1. Merna Van Pelt was born March 1893.  Merna died June 1976 at 83 years of age.  He married Neva Kronkright 06 August 1913.  Merna and Neva had 4 children:  Lillian, Helen, Fern and Orville.
  2. Ethel Van Pelt was born 08 December 1894.  Ethel died 11 March 1974 at 79 years of age.  She married Vernon Roy Hesselgesser 04 February 1914.  Ethel and Vernon had 1 child:  Vernon Jr.
  3. Annice Van Pelt was born 13 September 1897.  Annice died January 1979 at 81 years of age.  She married Wattson Hesselgesser in Central City, Merrick County, Nebraska 21 July 1917.  Annice and Wattson had 3 children:  Clarence, Esther and Rozella.
  4. Cecil Van Pelt was born 10 June 1900.  Cecil died November 1979.  Cecil married Roy Lint July 1923.  Cecil and Roy had 1 child:  Elanora.
  5. Mayo Leonard DeWitt Van Pelt was born 31 March 1907.  Mayo died 19 August 2001 in Archer, Merrick County, Nebraska at 94 years of age.  He married Vera Arta Woodward in Archer, Merrick County, Nebraska, 29 October 1925.  Mayo and Vera had 9 children:  Betty, DeWitt, Dwaine, Rhoda, Roger, Sharlene, Nora, Stephen and Judy.
