BENSON, WOODS, HAYS
Seeking information on families of Willie or Willis BENSON and Addie or Addis WOODS. Willie is son of Fanny T. HAYS and Fnu BENSON. Not sure of Addie's parents, but s/he is related to Nathan L. HAYS. Both are listed in 1899 as next of kin in a petition for proof of Will of Nathan L. Hays, of Starkey, Yates Co., NY. They are listed in 1899 as residents of Silver Creek, NE. In 1879, Fanny T. HAYS/BENSON was listed as a resident of Cherry Hill, Platt Co., NE. Have information on ancestry of Willie and am willing to share. Thanks!

18 Nov 2000 - Find the following -
Alson & Fanny (Hays) Benson can be found in the 1870 Census in Platte Co., NE (Columbus Pct); in the 1880 Census (ED94 p9 D5 F5: Butler Pct, Platte, NE); and in the 1885 Census (ED629 p15 D107 F107: Loupe Twp, Platte, NE). Both are deceased before 1900; were buried at Jackson Cemetery in Platte County. We have no information about any relationship to Nathan L. Hays.
Addie Benson Harris Woods - dau of Alson & Fanny Benson - appears in 1880 Fed. Census ED94: Butler Pct, Platte, NE - married to second husband and with assorted children of the first marriages of both herself (all surnamed Harris & born in Illinois), and her husband George T. Woods (his children mostly born NY).
William D Benson (son of Alson & Fanny Hayes Benson), married Caroline Carlow in Platte County and is found in 1880 Fed. Census ED94: Butler Pct, Platte, NE; in 1900 Fed. Census NE ED51 p17B D392 F405: Schuyler Ward 2, Schuyler, Colfax, NE; and in 1920 Fed. Census NE ED187 p20a D444 F449: Columbus Ward 2, Platte, NE. We apparently missed him in 1885 & 1910 census records.
A brother - Marritt (Merritt?) Benson married Mary Carlow, sister of Caroline Carlow. Sister - Malissa (Melissa?) Benson married Charles Lacy/Lucy/Locy (assorted spellings) and later turns up with surname Moore living with her brother William in 1920.
Quickly scanning through our files - this family included descendents that lived in Polk County at one time, so there are several counties to be searched. The first generation married in Platte County. You might be interested in securing extracts of Platte Marriage Book 1B, and the cemetery extracts for rural Platte County. Books are available through NSGS - website is http://www.rootsweb.com/~nesgs.
There are marriage records for a couple grandchildren in Merrick County (those are posted on this website).
The Platte Valley Kinseekers (Genealogy Society in Platte County) may be able to do a survey of extracted records for you, please write to them and inquire about their fees (see Platte website). They have huge 3x5 card files developed over many years - you could probably get death dates & obits from them. P.S. - Platte Book 1B, extracts from "Ancestree" (Journal of NSGS). Article probably posted in last couple days on Platte Co website.

In Bureau cemetery, lot 6 Perry & Elcy RAYNOR are listed. There is no death date for Elcy. Does this mean she was not actually interned there, or was the date (4 Aug 1918 ) just forgotten, and she is actually there? Elcy (Elsa Jane Corey) was my GG aunt. Also, where did the name "Bureau" come from? Both Perry & Elcy are from Bureau county Illinois. Is there some connection there ? If any one has some answers I would appreciate hearing from them.Thank you.
Richard Corey <firstname.lastname@example.org> 1 Nov 2000
Response: Bureau Cemetery is named for Bureau County, IL. First death was shortly after "colonists" arrived in Mead Twp. Burial place was needed, land donated, service held. Pierce Chapel was built elsewhere, & moved to location across the road from Bureau Cemetery at later date.
Regarding Elcy - No death date found in either of the cemetery books we copied, although name does appear. Recommend you write to Mr. Wm. Beck, c/o Pierce Chapel, RR 2, Clarks, NE 68628 - inquire for additional information.
Among possible explanations for the missing death date: 1. She remarried & was buried under different name. 2. She died elsewhere & body was not returned for burial (perhaps lived with a child?). 3. Family did not arrange for carving of death date.
It is possible that a death notice appeared in the newspaper if Mrs. Raynor's family maintained contact.with relatives or friends in Merrick County. Send donation & SASE to Merrick Historical Museum (see Lookups page), see if you can get an obit.

I am seeking info on Civil War veteran John L. RITTER, who served with Company H of the 87th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. The regiment mustered in York in September 1861. John came from a still small village called Rossville. After the war, he moved around a great deal: Chicago in 1867, Fremont, Nebraska 1867 - 1883, North Bend, Dodge County, Nebraska, 1883 - 1893, Houston, Texas summer of 1883, North Bend again 1894 - 1900, Billings, Montana 1901, Ames, [Iowa?] 1902 - 1906, Chapman, Nebraska 1906 - 1907.
I do not know his first wife's name, but the children were Louis N. (b. 12/30/75), Byron (b. 12/17/78), Frank (b. 04/23/82), and Matilda (b. 01/03/88). Widowed, he remarried Mary Ettie SKINNER October 1, 1894. He died in Chapman, Merrick County, Nebraska, as a result of being struck by a Union-Pacific train engine, so his death should not have gone unnoticed since it had to have made a big [I apologize for this ahead of time] SPLASH. I note the name RITTER is in the index of Volume I of the Merrick County history, pp 362-3.

I am searching for information for Carl SCHAUB who apparently was in Merrrick Co. before his marriage to Bertha Hansen in 1870. He is suppose to have come to North America as a workman on the ship "The Great Eastern" which laid the Trans-Atlantic cable in 1866. He was born in 1830 in Vienna, Austria and on his marriage record it states he resided in Merrick Co. and was age 40 at that time. I was wondering if there was a census in 1860? I do have information on Carl when he settled in Hall Co. NE. after his marriage. My fondest wish would be to find the name of his parents on some document.

My father had a sister Ada and brother Kermit. His mother was a BERNHARDT.
