We invite you to enter a query for your Nance County ancestors. Fill out the query form provided, please follow the instructions. We usually post queries within 24-48 hours.
"Because of privacy issue, queries which involve people which may still be alive will not be posted on NEGenWeb Project pages. NEGenWeb recommends that you contact an agency that locates missing people, if you can't find the person listed in online White Pages, etc." If your primary interest is recent adoption information (less than 70 years), we recommend you check Cyndi's List for adoption websites - you are more likely to make meaningful contact there than on genealogy pages.

I am trying to find my great grandparents, William FLOYD, b. circa 1840 in PA, and Anna McDONALD FLOYD, b circa 1840 in Scotland. Their son, William FLOYD (b 1862 in Clarinda, IA) and his wife Anna May JAYMES (b 1865 in Harrisburg, PA) were Quakers, and their first son, John FLOYD, was born on 12/22/1884 in Columbus, NE. On 9/20/1886, one Archie FLOYD, b circa 1862 in IA, was married in Columbus and listed his parents as William Floyd and Anna McDonald Floyd, which leads me to believe Archie is William's brother and that the senior Floyds must still be living in the vicinity in 1886. I am seeking information about Lilian Camille HIRST who was born 3 July 1892 in Fullerton (Nance County), Nebraska and her family. Parents were William F. and Belle (maiden name unknown) HIRST. The family appears to have moved to Cedar Rapids (Linn County), Iowa by at least 1907. This is all of the information I have at this time. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks -
Edward Carter, Murfreesboro, Tennessee  <>  19 Jan 2001
Response: Please see Merrick Co. Marriage Records, Bk C, p32 for marriage of William F. Hirst to Eliza B. Ray. Combination of records - (mostly marriages) on Merrick website indicate Eliza B. Ray was probably daughter of Andrew Ray & Sarah Clayton. We don't find her parents, only her siblings.
William F. Hirst was child of Francis M. Hirst and Elizabeth Sinsel - of VA & WV, respectively. Other children of this couple found in marriage records or on 1900 census of Merrick County: Edward S., Ernest H., John T., James A. and Lila B. Hirst. All but the two youngest indicate birthplace as Virginia or West Virginia.
Francis M. Hirst can be found in 1890 Vet Census which is posted on-line, he is living at Archer P.O., Merrick, NE that year. Birthdates of children would put them in Merrick County by 1879. In 1900, Francis M. Hirst is widower living in Midland Twp with three youngest children. T&C
PLEASE SEE HIRST page for Mr. Carter's contributions, he is NOT a Hirst family member.

The 1900 Census of Ward 3 in Fullerton lists DANIEL KREIDLER a widower , age 85, b. Feb. 15 1815 in Pennsylvania. as living in the household of his son, J.E. Kreidler. The following excerpt is from p.115 "Fullerton's First 100 years":  ... Kathryn Eleanor (Russell), fourth child was born December 9, 1911. She married Paul Pickett. They had one daughter Rogelyn Diane. Paul died and she married Lester C. Bryant. and was divorced. Kathryn married (Delbert) Earl Hess at Salt Lake City, Utah. They have one daughter Linda Karen.

I was very excited to read this as my mother, Juanita Pickett Clark has been trying to locate Rogelyn Pickett her niece (Paul Pickett was her brother) or Kathryn for nearly 70 yrs as they lost contact after Paul died.. A few years ago my mother and her sisters put a headstone on Paul's grave as it was unmarked. My mother (who is now 85) and I were going through old pictures this weekend and found pictures of Rogelyn, her father, grandparents and great-grandparents. We would like to locate her or her descendents if possible and see if they would like these pictures. We recently had a Pickett reunion in Omaha, NE and would like to invite her or her descendents to the next one.  Thank you for your help.

Response: WW I draft list includes David in first two versions published (July 1917), and Jacob in the last list (Oct 1918).  David is buried at Valley View Cemetery, Genoa.  Please send donation & SASE to Boone-Nance Genealogical Society for additional death info.

Will share 1800's photo of a Mr.& Mrs. Steaburg taken in Genoa, Nebraska. On the back is written their name and Holin, Kansas. I assume they have some kind of contact with Genoa, Neb. as that is where the photo was taken. It may be a wedding photo. I have no other info but if you can help locate or are their descendants please let me know. I would like to see this photo find a home.

I am looking for information on the Sunderman, Blankemeier and Bockmann families. They lived in Nance County from about 1902 through 1940 and in some cases maybe later. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you!

My grandmother, Jenny Etta Steele Lobdell Sutton, died on 17 Aug 1943 in Genoa. Can anyone tell me if she is buried in the Valley View Cemetery?  She was born 25 Feb 1903. She was married first to Ed Lobdell about 1924 and then after he died she married my grandfather, Isaac Henry Sutton about 1927.

I would like the death date and burial location of Minnie Lohr Swanson, daughter of Rev. Lincoln Lohr, and wife of Milton A. Swanson of Nance County, Nebraska. I hope to contact descendents regarding the Lohr family history.
Pam Hendricks, Lincoln, NE <> 11 Jun 2004

Just found fathers first wife's "real" name. Peter VENNE to Eva DUNHAM on 14 Oct 1905, as listed on page 138, Nance Co, NE records. Peter possibly had attended Genoa Indian School. On 15 Dec 1905 they were in Lawrence, KS at Haskell Indian School, where Peter did attend, on way to his job at the Ft. Mohave School, AZ. Need any info to confirm why he was in Genoa; info on if Eva was a student at the Genoa Indian School. Will order copy of marriage cert. if available.
Thank you.. Eugene Venne <> 1 May 2002 (change of email, 30 Oct 2002)

Joseph P. Vesey (Martha E. McBride), land purchased from US Gov. early 1880's on Timber Creek, then moved into Belgrade. Jeremiah Sample (Nancy Jane Heller) came to Nance Co. west of Belgrade, in 1884.
Roger W. Verley, great-grandson <> 3 Oct 2002
Mr. Verley is interested in land patent records, does not find these individuals on BLM website - that data file is NOT complete. In Jan 2000, the oldest records entered for NE were for year 1910.
With "legal description" of the land (get that from deeds at Nance County courthouse), copies of the homestead records can be ordered by mail from NARA Missouri branch.

Looking for any information on Moses Welch and Harriet Rawlings, pioneers to the Genoa area (Pawnee reservation) in March, 1857

Please give me any and all information that you may have on my grandparents Ina (Meyers) and Melvin Williams ...and any family history you have on them. Melvin Williams died about 1964 or '65. Grandmother Ina Williams lived in Fullerton until her death. My mom is Melva Williams Nicholson. There are some things in the musuem that belonged to my Grandma's family.
Debbie Merchant <> 07 Apr 2002
8 Apr 2002 Response: There is an article about the William MYERS family in "Fullerton's First 100 Years", pp 177-8. Other references for William Myers and family are posted on-line (see Nance Co. On-Line Resources) -
1885 Fed. Census Nance Co., Loup Ferry Pct, ED 533 p4 D31 F33;

We don't have anything about Melvin Williams. Recommend writing to BNGS (address on page) for an extract of the cemetery record and a copy of his obit. That should give you his birthdate & location. Please send donation and SASE with your request. You might be interested in one of their cemetery books?

I have an unusual request. A woman who married into my Bryning family was born in Genoa, Nance Co, Nebraska, on 19 May 1883. Her first name was Pearl, and her first husband's surname was Willsey. I would like to learn her maiden name. Are there birth indices there that might pinpoint what her birth name was? Thank you for your help.
Y. Shultis <> 23 Oct 2000
No birth indices available, and no birth certificates issued by the state until 1904. You could search through the 1885 census for a child with the given name "Pearl". (Check not only in Nance County, but in the adjacent townships of Platte County - where people often had postal service through "Genoa".)

Would like to correspond with anyone who might have information about the family of Nettie Ann (Wingerd) who married George W. Whitney. I believe she lived in Nance County after her marriage. Her father was Alfred Wingerd.

My grandfather, Frank Wozniak, who died in 1926, had a farm in East Newman Township, Nance County, Nebraska. I want to know when and from whom my grandfather acquired the farm. Also, I am trying to learn as much as I can about my grandpather, Frank Wozniak. Can you help me?

Sincerely, Daniel F. Wozniak < > 26 Dec 2008

I am looking for any information on the Yelm (Hjelm) family from Nebraska. I found my great, great grandfather Peter Yelm and his family on the Genoa Township 1900 Census. His wife was Gusta (Augusta Johnson???) married in Platte, Nebraska on Spt 4, 1888 shortly after she came from Sweden. Children: Gustave Yelm, John Yelm, Emil Yelm (my great grandfather). His parents were Petter Yelm (Hjelm) and Catherine ????. Brothers: Lester Yelm, Charles Yelm (aka Clark married to Christine Christiansen?? Sept 4, 1888), William Yelm, and Joseph Yelm. This is were my family tree ends without a trace. I know my great great grandfather came from Sweden when he was about 3 years old. I have searched through countless manifest and ship records with no luck. Your site has been the only confirmation of their existance or my heritage. Any information would be helpful and deeply appreciated!!!!!!
Melisa Ellsworth <> 20 Jan 2003
Response: You will also find Peter Yelm born c1865, in earlier census records
1870 Fed Census, Platte County Monroe Pct, p27 d227 f213 (w/parents)
1880 Fed. Census Platte County Monroe Pct ED96 p11 D79 F80 (w/mother)
1885 NE Census Platte County Monroe Pct ED630 p8 D69 F69 (w/mother)
1885 Census Nance Co., ED 532 p1 D12 F12 living as a boarder with Nels John Skoog.
Of these census records - the 1870 Platte & 1885 Nance County are posted on-line with NEGenWeb Project.
Notes: Peter (the younger) and Charles - on marriage records identify their parents as Peter Yelm & Catherine Matson. Charles married Christine Christiansen on the same date as Peter's marriage (same Judge officiated, & same witnesses); there may be a newspaper article about the event published in Columbus? The surname of Charles in census records looks like "Yelin" or "Yellen". Catherine Yelm is buried at Friends Cemetery, Platte County. Also buried there, son Charles with his wife & some children, etc. Platte Valley Kinseekers has published extracts in their rural cemeteries book. Please see the Platte County website of NEGenWeb Project, and the PVK website for lookups.
