Native American Research

It goes without saying that doing Native American Research is difficult.  Over the long history of the settlement of this country many records were either never created or were lost in the shuffle of time.

Here are a few good sites that may help your research.  Make sure you do your homework and try to have names, dates, or tribal names on hand.  There are several query sites available but the more information you provide, the easier it is to find an answer to your query.

Nebraska, South Dakota and Kansas share some of the Sioux Nation along with many other various tribes and families. Try to know for sure which tribe and area you are researching in.

• Native American Heritage       Begins here - a study guide on what to look for and where to find it.  Be prepared as this is one of the hardest searches you will ever do in your ancestry.

• A Guide to the Great Sioux Nation   - This is a travel log of the physical area with some good history mixed in.

• The Lakota Sioux  - The Great Sioux Nation - Excellent description of the tribal structure of the Sioux Nation and very helpful in locating which area and which tribe you want to do research in.

• Wowapi Oti Kin     - A good resource for general information pertaining to the Sioux people and their history.  Some names are listed and many good reference works are available.

• Sioux Map -This site provides a map to the various tribes locations in South Dakota and neighboring Nebraska - There are also address lists of Bureau of Indian Affairs and Tribal Offices located for each tribe.

• 1885 Nance County Census - shows the Genoa students and Indain employees

 
• REMINISCENCES OF A TEACHER AMONG THE NEBRASKA INDIANS, 1843-1885.

 

 

• The Sioux Indian War of 1890-91

 
• ALGenWeb Native American Resource Center - Many good research sites for the Southern Native American Tribes, Choctaw, Cherokee, Creek and Chickasaw groups, among many others all over the country.  Various treaties, commissions and research aids

• Kansas  - Plains and Emigrant Tribes of Kansas - Many good links for tribalinformation.

• Kansas Native American Research - KSGenWeb's connection site.

• First Nations Histories- a listing of all the first nations and what part they each played in the formation of the Indian Nations.  Take careful note of the quotation at the beginning of the page.

• Native American WebRing - A listing of at least 72 sites to check out for various tribes and location information.

 
• Council Fire - a listing of many information sources for different tribes.  History, Treaties pertaining to Nebraska,  names, customs, even recipes!

• A How To Guide for Native American Research - This site deals primarily with the Cherokee Nation but the rules and guidelines apply to any Native American Research.  NOT TO BE MISSED!!!

• State Historical Society of Missouri -  Valuable Resources for Kansas and Missouri Tribes.

• Native American Research - A collection of sites that may be on interest - Cemetery, burial and tribal records for some of the neighboring South Dakota Sioux tribes

• Federally Recognized Tribes -  A currant map showing all the tribal locations and currant addresses for Tribal offices throughout the United States.

•  Nations, Tribes and Bands - a good source for other links to many different locations

• Bureau of Indian Affairs - Basic information regarding tribes and their locations -public and social  programs and economic development for each region.

 
• Winnebago Reservation Index - a list of who in 1913

 
• Omaha Indian Music and History - 1885 - 1985  100 years of music and oral history
•  Nebraska Loup Valley  - Early exploration of Aboriginal Remains in the Loup Valley
• Red Cloud Agency and Ft. Laramie - 1867-1874 journal entries and telegraph dispatches
• Stone Grave People of Nebraska - and farther down more interesting tidbits of history and discovery of the Native Americans and there predecessors.
• Santee Indian Agency - an article about the demise of the Agency town
• "The Nebraska Aborigines as They Appeared in the Eighteenth Century"

Published 1913 by NE Academy of Sciences.18th Century Nebraska Native Americans reporting on any/all documents known in 1913, related
to American Indians in NE, & dated prior to the Lewis & Clark
expedition. Focus seems to be determination of tribal names &
locations.  Everyname index.
