May 11, 2010 Minutes

The Omaha Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution met at Venice Inn, May 11.  Attending the meeting were members:  Michael J. Bisig #172361 (now living in Vancouver, Washington State), Tom Conley, Richard Ewing (Lynn), David Kentsmith (Kitty), Robert Knott (Rosemary), Bill Sellgren (Sara), Fred Walden (Jan), and William Webb (Georgia).  Also attending was guest, Bob Jones a new SAR applicant.

 President David Kentsmith, opened the meeting at 7:45 P.M.  All stood and repeated the Pledge of Allegiance, and members repeated the Pledge to the SAR.

 A motion was made, seconded, and carried to accept the Minutes of the April 13 meeting as they appeared on members’ e-mails.

 The State Meeting will be Sunday, September 26 at Mahoney State Park.  President Kentsmith advised members that at the State Meeting it is customary to award a State Police Member,  a fire and safety award  to a fire department member, and a new award that has been added for an emergency medical technician award (EMT).  The Nebraska State SAR has also been giving a scholarship award to an Eagle Scout who is chosen through submitting a winning essay on a subject related to the American Revolution.  The scholarship is $200.  In the past, the money for the State Eagle Scout Scholarship was raised and sustained by the contributions of a few members.  President Kentsmith advised members to expect discussion at the September 26th  SAR State meeting that the $200 scholarship contribution be supported by the State SAR, not through contributions from individual members.  President Kentsmith also encouraged all to attend the State Meeting September 26.

Robert Knott encouraged members who have other patriotic ancestors to file supplemental applications and to continue working on their family histories.

 Due to vacations and multiple activates of members during the summer months, it was moved, seconded, and carried that the Omaha Chapter of the SAR meetings be suspended during the summer months of June, July, and August.  Therefore, the next meeting of the Omaha Chapter will be September 14 (second Tuesday of September).

 Fred Walden announced that the Auditing Committee appointed by State SAR President LaVerne Stetson will meet at 10:00 A.M. Saturday 5 June at his Store to review the State Treasurer’s books.

 President Kentsmith reminded members that Fred Walden will be the an alternate trustee to the National Meeting in Cleveland, Ohio.  If members have any issues or concerns they would like Fred to bring up at the meeting, they are to contact him.

Richard Ewing presented an excellent slide program depicting his family’s participation in the prerevolutionary era, Point Pleasant and the Revolutionary War.

 Members stood and repeated in unison the SAR “Until we meet…again”

 A motion was made, seconded, and carried to adjourn the meeting.

The next meeting will be September 14, 2010 at the Venice Inn at 6:00 P.M.

April 13, 2010 Minutes

The Omaha Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution met at the Venice Inn Restaurant April 13.  Attending the meeting were members: R. Galusha, D. Kentsmith, R. Knott, J. Parsons, F. Walden, and W. Webb and applicant R. Ewing.   Also attending were new members:  M. Diercks, C. Harris, M. Wheeler, and seven guests.

 Chapter President, David Kentsmith opened the meeting at 7:15 P.M.  Members stood and repeated the Pledge of Allegiance and the Pledge to the SAR.

 Minutes of the March meeting were distributed to members.  There was a motion to approve the minutes as distributed, it was seconded and motion carried.

 The treasury report was given by John Parsons.  13 members have paid chapter dues.  Members who haven’t paid are encouraged to pay the Chapter Secretary.  Chapter checking account as of last month shows a balance of $1781.07.  Parsons reported on the upcoming medals to be given to the ROTC graduates from various Omaha area high schools and the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Creighton University.  These medals and certificates are funded by the James B. Ladd trust of Minneapolis, Minn.  Compatriot Parsons is in touch with the foundation trustee who provides the funding. Treasurer Parsons asked if the chapter wanted to continue an ad in the National SAR Magazine advertising our Omaha Chapter meetings at $24 per year.  Motion made and seconded to approve 2 year ad - $48.  Motion carried.  There was a motion to accept his report which was seconded and the motion carried.

 President Kentsmith thanked 2nd VP William Webb for submitting the excellent SAR article that was published in the Omaha World Herald.  This article is an effort to publicize our meetings.

 Retiring State President Robert Knott gave a report on the state meeting at Mahoney State Park. He reported the list of the new state officers for 2010-2011 that had been elected and include State President – LaVerne Stetson, Lincoln, Fred Walden  - Omaha 1st VP, David Kentsmith - Omaha, State Secretary, William Webb – Omaha, State Treasurer and Robert Knott, Omaha – alternate Registrar .

 Guest of Compatriot member Dick Galusha including a prospective new member and a visiting member from another SAR society were introduced. 

 Tom Conley, First Vice President administered the oath of initiation to the SAR to:  Dr. Mark Jeffrey Diercks, Col. (ret) Chester Raymond Harris, and Michael Harold Wheeler.  President David Kentsmith presented certificates and rosettes to the new members.

 Members stood and repeated in unison the SAR “Until we meet again….”

 A motion was made, seconded, and carried to adjourn the meeting.

The next meeting will be May 11, 2010, at the Venice Inn at 6:00 P.M.

Omaha Chapter SAR – Meeting Minutes 9 March 2010

 

The Omaha Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution met March 9, 2010 at Venice Inn.  Members attending were:  Conley T, Kentsmith D., Knott R., Parsons J., Taylor J., Walden F., Webb W., and prospective member Ewing R.  Seven guests were in attendance.

 The meeting was called to order by President David Kentsmith at 7:50 P.M.  All stood for the repeating of the Pledge of Allegiance.  Members remained standing for the recitation of the Pledge to the SAR.  The minutes of the February meeting were approved as distributed.

 John Parsons, treasurer, reported that all was in order for the delivery of ROTC awards.  John also requested a reimbursement of $15 be allowed for the purchase of a Good Citizenship medal.  It was moved and seconded to approve of the $15.

State President, Bob Knott gave a report of the upcoming State meeting, March 20 at Mahoney State Park.  Bob distributed some copies of the business meeting program. The program will include presentation of awards, Secretary and Treasurer reports, a report for the By- Laws Committee by David Kentsmith, election and installation of State Officers as the program.

Bob Knott introduced the Speaker, Lonnie Moore a history teacher on the Omaha Westside High School Faculty.  Mr. Moore dressed in Trapper’s clothing, impersonated John Coulter who was a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, 1804-1806. Mr. Moore, as John Coulter, presented incidences and described members of the expedition.  He also described Coulter’s adventures after leaving the Expedition.

A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn the meeting.

The next Omaha Chapter of SAR will be April 13, at the Venice Inn.  The STATE SAR Meeting will be held Saturday 20 March at noon Mahoney State Park.  PLEASE ATTEND – will vote on Revised NE SAR Constitution and By-laws plus elect State Officers.

Subject: SAR Minutes February 9, 2010 Meeting

             SAR February 9, 2010 Minutes of Meeting

 President David Kentsmith called the meeting to order at 7:55 P.M.  There were 17 members and guests present.  President Kentsmith installed John Parsons as treasurer and Fred Walden as secretary.

Minutes of the January 12 meeting were approved as sent via e-mail.

John Parsons gave the treasurer’s report.    John reported that the bank balance is $1,776.07. The treasurer’s report was approved.

Parsons said the Jr. ROTC medals were in and asked for volunteers to hand out the awards at the various area high schools and two local colleges ROTC recipients.  He agreed to send via e-mail a list of the volunteers, their respective schools, and the dates.

A motion was made and seconded then approved on vote to authorize the Omaha Chapter Treasurer John Parsons to submit the IRS form renewing our status as a “non-profit” organization. John Parsons will file income tax forms for the chapter.

President Kentsmith reported that Chapter dues are due January 1 of each year.  Chapter dues are $10.00 a year.  Compatriots are to send the dues to Secretary Fred Walden (4840 Franklin St. Omaha, NE 68104).  Fred will record payment of dues and then forward them to John Parsons, Treasurer.  It was noted that no member will be excluded if he is unable to pay the dues.

There was recognition of prospective members and guests.

President Kentsmith reported that the revised Constitution and by-laws are complete and approved by the committee.  They will be on the web-site for review by members in preparation for a vote of approval at the March 20 State meeting.  A copy will be e-mailed to all members or sent by US mail to those who do not have an e-mail address.

President Kentsmith encouraged attendance at the State Meeting at Mahoney State Park, March 20, 2010, at 12 noon. Awards for State Police Officer, State Fire Officer and recognition of the winning Eagle Scout who will receive a small scholarship stipend.  In the business meeting, there will nominations for new State Officers and installation of officers.  In addition, there will be a review and vote on approving the Constitution and By-laws at the business meeting.

The President reported that we have several applications  at the national headquarters waiting for approval.

President Kentsmith acknowledged the importance of our first President, George Washington, and distributed copies of facts about Patriot George Washington.

It was announced that our treasurer, John Parsons, will be initiated as Grand Master GLAF&A Masons of Nebraska on February 14, 2010, at the Scottish Rites Bldg. At 20th and Douglas St. at 2:00 P.M.  All are welcome to attend.  A motion was made, seconded, and approved to adjourn the meeting.  The next meeting will be March 9, 2010.

 Minutes for January 12, 2010

 

The monthly meeting of the Omaha Chapter Sons of the American Revolution was held on 12 January 2010 at the Venice Inn.  President Walden opened the meeting at 7:00 P.M.  A quorum of voting members was present

Minutes of the November 10 meeting were read and approved.

John Parson gave the treasurer’s report.  He reported that he had correspondence from James Ladd and a trust fund check of $320.  The balance in the chapter treasury is $1,776.06.  Mr. Parsons also reported that we will order medals and certificates for the ROTC programs.  We will also order a citizenship award for Boys Town.

Prospective members , Richard Ewing, and Ben Harvey were introduced and they, in turn, introduced their guests.

President Walden swore in the new chapter president, David Kentsmith.  The new President then swore in his new first and second vice presidents, Thomas Conley and William Webb. John Parsons agreed to continue as Chapter Treasurer.

President Kentsmith discussed the current status concerning the changes necessary for the State Constitution and By-Laws.

President Kentsmith and Chief Knott reported that at the State Meeting held November 11, 2009, a tentative date had been set for a State Meeting to be held at Mahoney State Park March 20, 2010.

The meeting was adjourned by President Kentsmith at 8:06 P.M.

Minutes for November 10, 2009 

  1. The monthly meeting of the Omaha Chapter Sons of the American Revolution was held on 10 November 2009 at the Venice Inn.   President Walden opened the meeting at 7:00 PM.  A quorum of voting members was present.
  2. David Kentsmith talked about our State and Chapter constitutions, both which need to be discussed concerning possible changes to reflect what is currently being done by tradition and what should be formally written in our State guidance documents.  It was also noted that the State Society does not have written By Laws to our Constitution.  A motion was made, seconded and unanimously passed that the State President appoint a Committee to review the State Constitution and recommend any changes that should be made and write appropriate By Laws for our Society.  There was unanimous concurrence that David Kentsmith chair the Committee.  State President Bob Knott and Chapter Vice President David Kentsmith will attend the Lincoln Chapter meeting on November 11 and present the background concerning the Constitution and also ask for a motion and vote on this subject.
  3. State President Bob Knott and Chapter Vice President David Kentsmith did attend the meeting in Lincoln on November 11th.   David Kentsmith presented the background concerning the Constitution and lack of By Laws.  After much discussion, Chapter vice-president John Reinert called for a motion.  With a quorum of voting members present, a motion was made by Merle Rudebusch, seconded and unanimously passed that the State President appoint a Committee to review the State Constitution and recommend any changes that should be made.  The committee would be charged to write appropriate By Laws for our Society to be reviewed by all members and then voted on for adopting at the next State meeting.  State President Bob Knott asked for concurrence of the Lincoln members as he had of the Omaha Chapter members that the State President appoint David Kentsmith Chairman of the Committee.  The Lincoln Chapter concurred.  State President Bob Knott then appointed David Kentsmith as Chairman of the Committee.  Committee appointees from Lincoln are John Reinert, Merle Rudebusch and Virgil Dechhart.  Committee appointees from Omaha are David Kentsmith, Fred Walden and John Parsons.

4.  The Omaha meeting was adjourned by President Walden at 9:00 PM.

Minutes for October 13, 2009

  1. The monthly meeting of the Omaha Chapter Sons of the American Revolution was held on 13 October 2009 at the Venice Inn.   President Walden opened the meeting at 8:00 PM.
  2. We had 14 in attendance.   President Walden began with everyone reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. 
  3. Michael Wheeler was in attendance, his application for membership was signed by the appropriate officers and will be forwarded to our State Secretary for further handling and forwarding to National.
  4. We had an excellent presentation, by Gary Iske, who is the Sarpy County Museum Director on the history of Fort Crook and Fort Omaha.
  5. David Kentsmith talked about our constitution, both Chapter and State which needs to be discussed concerning possible changes.   He asks that everyone review the constitutions and blog on our web site and post any comments concerning possible changes needed.
  6. John Parsons brought forward for a vote that membership dues for our Chapter be $10.00 per year.  Everyone was in agreement.
  7. Bob Knott stated that Chapter Officers for 2010-11 should be voted on and that installation will take place during our State Annual Meeting in February 2010.  The following were unanimously voted to be our officers for the upcoming biannual period.  President:  Dr. David Kentsmith; Vice President:  Thomas Conley;  2nd Vice President:  William Webb; Secretary:  Fred Walden; Treasurer:  John Parsons.
  8. The State “picnic” meeting will be held October 18th at 1 PM.  We will meet at Mahoney State Park as we have in the past.  Mark your calendars.  We hope to see you all there.  The food is great.

Minutes for September 8, 2009

 

  1. The monthly meeting of the Omaha Chapter Sons of the American Revolution was held on 8 September 2009 at the Venice Inn.   President Walden opened the meeting at 7:30 PM.
  2. We had 17 in attendance.  We were honored that the Vice President General for the North Central District, William H. Lees was able to attend (see photo page).  He is also a Trustee for the state of Iowa and also serves as the Iowa Registrar.  Also in attendance was John Reinert, the Secretary for the Nebraska Society (see photo page).
  3. Omaha Chapter President Fred Walden and Vice-president David Kentsmith administered the Oath of Membership to new SAR member Loren Bundt who is currently teaching in Tokyo, Japan where he lives with his wife and new son. (see photo page)
  4. We had an excellent presentation, by  Lonnie Moore, from Westside High School who gave an excellent account of the life and times of Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys of Vermont.  His attire and realistic portrayal  of Ethan Allen made you almost swear Ethan Allen was there talking.  His classroom teaching techniques at Westside High School makes American History come alive for his students.
  5. David Kentsmith talked about our constitution, both Chapter and State which needs to be discussed concerning possible changes.  He will write up his thoughts and present for consideration.
  6. David Kentsmith also recommended as a show of support for Lonnie Moore's outstanding teaching of American History the chapter provide a monetary donation to help him in his teaching of the American Revolution.  Lonnie will provide us what he feels might be appropriate for our consideration.  (see photo page).
  7. John Reinert reminded everyone that the State “picnic” meeting will be held October 18th at 1 PM.  We will meet at Mahoney State Park as we have in the past.  Mark your calendars.  We hope to see you all there.  The food is great.
