SEVENTY YEARS AGO--1933

Cast in the junior class three-act comedy, "Meet Uncle Sally" were Marshall Jensen, Gladys Nelson, Francel Peterson, Jeannette Jorgensen, Arlo Christensen, George Hammond, Thyra Moore, Janet Rogers, Mike Bang, Grace Johnson, Jerome Exstrom and Andy Anderson. Mrs. S. C. Jones celebrated her 87th birthday on New Year's Day. Friends and neighbors gathered at the home of Harlan Jensen to finish picking his corn.

SIXTY YEARS AGO--1943

A measles epidemic swept through Kearney County with 50 new cases being reported to health and school authorities. Nurses were stationed at both the grade school and high school to examine all students as they entered the buildings. Bart Aabel, manager of the Rogers Clothing Store, arranged a window display featuring a Red Cross kit bag and its contents. The county chapter of the Red Cross had completed its quota of 200 kit bags and was immediately assigned the task of making an additional 500 bags. George R. Kargo was promoted from private to corporal in the United States Army Air Force.

FIFTY YEARS AGO--1953

Burdette Weedlun was named "Man of the Year" by the Minden Chamber of Commerce. Among his services was the heading of the Diamond Jubilee celebration. A March of Dimes benefit basketball game pitted the 1952 Minden High School championship team against the Minden professionals. Amoung the professionals was Vernon Christensen, Russ Borgue, Dick Rolls, Don Peterson, Bill Crary, Vaughn Christensen, Ray Van Norman, Marshall Beck and Bob Garrett. Jack Bensen was the referee. Kenneth Hoffman was elected president of the Minden Council of Churches.

FORTY YEARS AGO--1963

Clifford Jacobsen of Heartwell was given a certificate of appreciation for serving on the Kearney County Extension Board for four years and serving as president for two years. Herbert Swanson was elected the new president. Winners of the Christmas decorating contest sponsored by the Wilcox Lions Club were John Gishwiller, Claren Berggren and Carol Falk. Honorable mention went to Mrs. Ingeborg Falk and Raymond Shubert. The Bar Association of Kearney County and the judges held a special recognition service for Carl Holmes. Holmes retired after serving 28 years as county clerk.

THIRTY YEARS AGO--1973

Harold Hokser, an employee of Warp Publishing Company, retired after 48 years of continuous employment. Hokser worked as a linotype operator for nearly all of the company's publications, including the workbooks, the Christmas Messenger, Treasured Verses and Heroes Without Medals. Steve Christensen and Blake Butler each scored 14 points as the Minden downed Burwell in the Hastings College HOliday Tournament. Butler scored 16 and Mark Etzelmiller and Kerry Kimple each had 14 as the Whippets won the tourney with a win over Superior. A.M. (Snowy) Maxon was appointed to serve as new registrar for the selective service system of Kearney County.

TWENTY YEARS AGO--1983

A winter storm left ten inches of snow piled in drifts. A rain before the snowstorm caused streets and highways to become slick under the snow. Jennifer Nickel had 15 points as the Axtell Wildkittens won the Pleasanton Holiday Tournament by defeating Litchfield. Scott S. Jacobsen, son of Melvin and Glenda Jacobsen, was identified for early promotion to senior airman in the U. S. Air Force.

TEN YEARS AGO--1993

The Eddie and Harriet Carpenter farmstead located in rural Kearney County, was among five Nebraska properties to be considered for nomination to the National Register of HIstoric Places by the Nebraska State Historic Preservation Board. Stephanie Weldon, daughter of Murray and Lucie Weldon of Axtell, was named first place winner in the Axtell V.F.W. "voice of Democracy" contest. Second place winner was Danel Reeves and Jeff Oberg placed third.

SEVENTY YEARS AGO--1933

Sheriff Renus Kargo lost his pocketbook containing $28 in currency, some checks and other valuables. He recieved the wallet backin the mail with all but the currency in tact. A note was included which read, "Sir: Necessity forces me to borrow the cash. It was a God send. Some day I will return it." The large house occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Day of Wilcox burned to the ground. The Days were visiting in Kansa at the time of the fire. Andrew C. Hove was elected cahsier of the Minden Exchange Bank at the annual meeting of the stockholders, succeeding Mrs. Thomas McQuillan.

SIXTY YEARS AGO--1943

President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress for almost 109 billion dollars as the amount necessary to run the government for the following fiscal year andprosecute the war against the Nazis and Japanese. Duane Layton, Virgil Thompson, Archie Beck and Dale W. Johnson, all of Minden, and Irvin W. Haws of Heartwell left for induction into the armed services. Kearney county farmers were stunned at the announcement from Washington that the government had frozen corn prices. According to George Rassmussen, manaager of the Farmers Cooperative Grain Company in Minden, No.2 white corn was frozen at 92 cents and yellow corn at 79 cents.

FIFTY YEARS AGO--1953

Drawings were prepared for a proposed addition to the Axtell school building, according to Lester Hunt, superintenent. Current enrollment for the school was 226 students. A report on 1952 construction in Minden revealed that 20 new homes were constructed or started furing the period. Plans were completed for construction of two draniage ditches to move excess surface water from land lying in the North Dry Creek Drainage District in north Kearney County. The plan would be put to a vote at a future election.

FORTY YEARS AGO--1963

Lester Space, with an average of 208 bushels of corn per acre, won the 1962 Tekseed high yield award in the irrigated corn division. More than 600 farmers in five states took part in the competition. Art Fritson scored 19 points as the Greyhounds of Hildreth defeated the Elm Creek Buffaloes. Richard Wilson was the featured speaker for the Woman's Club meeting. Wilson told about his travels through southern Europe. Of special interest were the dolls from Russia.

THIRTY YEARS AGO--1973

Nathan Eckloff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Eckloff, won teh second place trophy in original public address at the Kearney State College Speech Tournament. New president of the Minden Chamber of Commerce was Jack Marlatt, replacing outgoing president Homer Pierce. Other officers were Lily Jensen, vice president; and Ray Van Norman, treasurer.

TWENTY YEARS AGO--1983

Robert Raun was appointed the new director of the Department of Agriculture in Nebraska by Gov. Bob Kerrey. Mary Zicafoose, a Nebraska Artist in Residence, visited the Hildreth Public Schools, teaching students how to use the spinning wheel and a floor loom as well as other forms of art. A 300pound set of free weights was added to the Minden High School weight room by the Minden Whippet Booster Club.

TEN YEARS AGO--1993

Jeffry McCall, special consultant to the Hildreth and Wilcox school districts, presented new proposals for consolidation to the two boards of education and members of the school districts at a special meeting. Phyllis Kenyon, a Minden High School graduate, was honored by the doctors and employees of Kearney Clini at a retirement party. Joel and Tracy Groothuis of Wilcox announced the opening of the Town and Country Service.

SEVENTY YEARS AGO--1933

A secondhand store was opened by Gus Frederickson who would deal in used furniture, harness, tires, etc. C. G. Binderup,president of the Kearney County Moratorium Association, gave a talk to a full-capacity crowd on the necessity for a moratorium on the unreasonable foreclosure of mortgages or tax liens on homes and farms. Kearney County students enrolled at the University of Nebraska were Jennie Arnold, Pauline Freedlum, Marion Lynn, Alice Pedley, George R. Peterson, Collins W. Strand, Guenn Sutton, Jane Youngson and Harold Zieg, all of Minden; Roy W. Equall, Gilbert Erickson, Herbert Hartley and Chloris Rehn, all of Wilcox; Merrill A. Nelson and Kenneth Broman, both of Axtell; Melba Doyle, Heartwell; and Merlyn Johnson, Norman.
SIXTY YEARS AGO--1943

Katherine Pedersen, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jim Pedersen, was ordered to report for basic training as a member of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. The Kearney County Fishing Club was organized with George Brainard elected first president. Roy Bang was elected secretary-treasurer. Mr. & Mrs. Fred Pantenburg observed their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house preceded by a wedding dinner at the home of Mrs. Leo Ryan.
FIFTY YEARS AGO--1953

Ardelle Martin, daughter of Mr. & mrs. Fred Martin, was the winner of a $100 third place award in a state-wide "Stevenson for President" essay contest sponsored by Bernard J. Boyle, democratic national committeeman for Nebraska. Dr. E. R. Chappell, Father Ed Jaworowski and Glen Rasmussen were honored at a Lions Club meeting for having the best 1952 Christmas displays. Installed as officers of the Hildreth Chapter 170 Order of the Eastern Star were Ilow Soker, worthy matron; Henry Erickson, worthy patron; Jeanne Neville, associate matron; Ethel Anderson, treasurer; Marian Dinnis, secretary; Sarah Bertrand, conductress; and Jacqueline Schwartz, associate conductress.

FORTY YEARS AGO--1963

The Rev. R. E. Carlson was installed as the associate pastor of Bethpage Mission in Axtell. Hans C. Madsen was elected as the chairman of the Kearney County Board of Supervisors. Vice chairman was Lee R. Wells. Double winners in the women's city bowling tournament were Bobbie Nichol and Jane Parsons. Winning second place were Diane Johnson and Evelyn Knudsen. Third place winners were Leatha Kilgore and Mabel Johnson.
THIRTY YEARS AGO--1973

Harold Warp presented a check for $230.27, representing the amount of money dropped into the wishing well at the Pioneer Village, to Bethany Home. Warp explained that the well was not intended for coin tossers, but since the custom was beyond his control, he planned to turn over all coins to Bethany Home. Officers of the Minden distric of the Camp Fire Girls were Marjorie Jean Prince, chairperson; Carol Kuehn, vice chairperson; Margaret Anderson, treasurer; Betty Mae Friskopp, secretary; Evelyn Everson, registrar.
TWENTY YEARS AGO--1983

The Minden Special Olympics Team participated in gymnastics roller skating in Holdrege and the bowling tournament in Grand Island. The Hildreth Lions Club presented its final payment for the purchase of Hildreth Lions Hall. The building was purchased from Lou Held in 1975. Held, no only was presented final payment, but also a plaque commemorating his many years of service to the Hildreth community.
TEN YEARS AGO--1993

The Bethany Home Board of Trustees sought volunteers to form a committee to search for the most practical ways to use the home's three story structure when the new facilities were completed. The second grade class at East Elementary attended a play preseted by the third grade class entitled "Planet Parade." The students represented the sun and the planets in the solar system. Christmas lighting contest winners at Axtell were Roger Metzger, Richard Verbeck, Steve Popple, Jerry Nelson, Mary Jane Jensen, Lonnie Vannier, Blair Popple and Bonnie Nelson.

SEVENTY YEARS AGO--1933

Clifford Newton replaced William Lippstreu of Wilcox who retired after driving the Standard Oil truck for 14 years. Mr. & Mrs. Mike Smith of Heartwell entertained at a bridge party at their home. Those present were Mr. & Mrs. Charles Hoban, Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Hoban, Mr. & Mrs. Martin Hoban, Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Cross, Dr. & Mrs. J. J. Smith and Margaret, Elizabeth and Claire Hoban. Mrs. George Travis, Mrs. Charles Johnson and Mrs. Lars Johnson were hostesses for the U. P. Missionary Society.

SIXTY YEARS AGO--1943


Durfee Larson, son of Mr. & Mrs. L. C. Larson, was commissioned a second lieutenant in the anti-aircraft artillery of the U. S. Army and ordered to report for duty. Larson was a social science instructor at Kearney State Teachers College. Joseph McLees, music instructor in the Minden schools, left for induction into the armed services. Mrs. E. Paul Gilgen of Upland assumed the duties of vocal music instructor at the Minden schools. The Minden Hatchery, owned and operated by A. F. Wright, opened in the building north of the Warp Publishing Company. Electrically operated incubators were capable of hatching 50,000 eggs on each run.

FIFTY YEARS AGO--1953

Dime day was celebrated in Minden. Restaurant owners offered to sell a cup of coffee for a dime and give half of each dime to the March of Dimes. C. W. Strand was installed as worshipful master of the Minden masonic Lodge. Other officers were Jack Craig, senior warden; bob Randall, junior warden; C. J. Lehmkuhl, treasurer; and Jack White, secretary. Officers re-elected to their positions on the Minden Gun and Rod Club were Ray Bjorklund, president; Ivan Newbold, vice president; and Gene Rasmussen, secretary-treasurer.


FORTY YEARS AGO--1963

Ted Quick, first chair cornetist in the Minden High School band, was selected for the Nebraska High School Honor Band, sponsored by Hastings College. The Fireman's Auxiliary emt at the home of Mrs. Olaf Johnson with hazel Stenson as co-hostess. They worked on their project of stuffed toys. Installed as officers of the Moab Chapter 172 Order of the Eastern Star were Kathryn Helzer, worth matron; Don Helzer, worthy patron; Melvina Bjorklund, association matron; and Roland Christensen, associate patron.

THIRTY YEARS AGO--1973

Mrs. Russell Olsen was the new teacher at the Axtell Christian Togetherness School. The Rev. and Mrs. Don Kuhlman honored the Rev. and Mrs. Don Wilken at a farewell party at their home. The Wilkens had accepted a call to Eaton, CO. Axtell seniors receiving all A's for the second quarter and first semester were LeAnn Erickson and Susan Holsten. Jolene Nelson received all A's for the first semester.


TWENTY YEARS AGO --1983

Two additions were featured in the grand re-opening of the Pioneer Restaurant: the Boxcar Lounge and the Pioneer Banquet Room. an overtime was necessary for the Axtell Wildkittens to down the Hildreth Greyhounds. Lisa Kersenbrock was high scorer for the Greyhounds with 20 and Jennifer Nickel the high scorer for the Wildkittens with 23. The Wilcox boys won their final home game of the season over Amherst. Tony Hansen and Mark Asche had 16 and 15 points respectively.

TEN YEARS AGO--1993

Stephen Dahl, an Axtell High School senior and son of Bill and Linda Dahl, was credited for saving the life of a 16-month-old girl, Kristie Sheneman on Christmas Day. Wilcox seniors on the semester honor roll were Kristy Beahm and Forrest Swanson. Honorable mention were Kevin Bergstrom and Jim Duering. Winners in the C.L. Jones Middle School Geography Bee were Marshall Jensen, Zac Bristol, Danielle Nielsen, Rachel Lux, Sarah Petersen, James McCormick, Eric Will, Alicia Sigurdons, Anne McCormick and Mark Bloomfield. McCormick was named contest overall winner.

SEVENTY YEARS AGO--1933
The Royal Neighbors of America held installation services at the home of Mrs. W. E. Green. Installed were Lula Atchison, past oracle; Nancy Pinkham, oracle; Nettie Anderbery, vice oracle; and Sadie Christensen, chancellor. The Old Settler's Association received a permit from the county board to erect on the courthouse grounds a memorial to the pioneers of Kearney County. The funds for the monument purchase had accumulated from past years' membership dues, set aside for that purpose. Cast in the American Legion Auxiliary comedy, "Two Days to Marry" were Don Werner, Donald Golay, John Kauffelt, Mrs. Don Werner, Mrs. John Kauffelt, Mrs. Merlin Wright and Verne Golay.
SIXTY YEARS AGO--1943

Vernon W. Newbold recieved a captain's commission in the United States Army Air Corps. Mr. & Mrs. Will Sheldon celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary at the home of thier daughter, Mrs. Fred Lange. The Minden Woman's Club sponsored a program entitled, "Our Priceless Citizenship." A quiz following the program included questions regarding etiquette in the use of the American flag.

The Axtell basketball team remained unbeaten as they downed Upland 53-44. Rolland LIndgren and Jim Lingwall each had 16 points. Seniors on the Minden High School honor roll for the first semester were Wayne almquist, Jim Peck, Marcia Youngson, laVonne Alberts, Joe Brown, Carol Peterson, Clyde Yost, Joe Bayer and Beverly Berger. The Kearney County Fair Board members announced that a complete carnival would be on the midway during the Kearney County Fair.

Keith Ericson, Sylvia Nelson and Natalie Carlson of Axtell were selected to participate in the Nebraska High School Honor Band, sponsored by Hastings College. Seniors making the semester honor roll at Minden High School were Ann Strine, Linda Shearer, Patti Wiggins, Judy Dornhoff, Eva Horan, Susan Christensen and Sarah Meier. Seniors with a perfect attendance record were Allen Anderson, Roger Bell, Ann Berkeypile, Vern Christensen, Linda Haxton, Karen Krueger, Jim Kuehn, Lynn Nelson, Ted Quick, Linda Shearer, Ann Strine and Larry Wilcox.

Kristi Rasmussen, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Eugene Rasmussen, was installed as honored queen of Bethel No. 74, International Order of Jobs Daughters. Other elective officers were Lorraine Beck, senior princess; Ann Prince, junior princess; Jill Garrett, guide; and Karen Marlatt, marshal. Lottie Ingmanson celebrated her 98th birthday at the Long Term Care Unit. Kim Brooks of Axtell taught the Wa Han Ka Campfire Girls how to knit and purl during their three January meetings.
TWENTY YEARS AGO--1983

Alberta Christensen published her book titled, "The See and Sound Circus." Christensen, a Minden Public Schools speech pathologist and teacher, said, "the book was written especially for moms and dads, grams and gramps who wanted to teach their children to read and write." The Minden Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting for Guidry's "66" Service, owned by Jeri Guidry. Minden High School speech students receiving ratings at the Franklin Invitational Speech Meet were Mike George, third in extemporaneous speaking; Linda Harmann, first in informative speaking; and Linda and Pam Nielsen, first in duet acting.
TEN YEARS AGO--1993

Among the activities Hildreth students celebrated being in school 100 days were making and decorating 100 cupcakes, doing math problems associated with 100, brainstorming 100 common and proper nouns and describing 100 places they would like to visit. With Jennie Bunger, Mary Bloomfield and Debbie meisenbach in double figures, the Minden Whippettes downed McCook 46-35. John Kuehn of Heartwell placed third in persuasion as the Hastings College Forensics Team won the concordia Forensics Tournament.
