Requesting Lookups

Look ups are done on a first come-first serve basis, with priority given to specific requests, and as time permits. There is no charge for doing lookups other than the cost for copies and postage, however donations (even small token ones) are always welcomed and appreciated. Our by-laws do not allow for individual members to be compensated.

When making a request, please check first to see if that the information is already online. Our goal is to get as much information online as possible, so that you can continue with your research at your own pace and not be dependent on us.

The only other request we ask is that you be considerate of our time. Our staff is completely volunteer, and they deserve some consideration in the scope and amount of research they are asked to do. All requests should be specific.

If you ask for something very specific, such as do you have an obituary for John Doe who died on October 23, 1879, we will look through every newspaper we've got for that timeframe. If you ask for an obituary for John Doe who died sometime in the 1870s...sorry, that's just too many newspapers to look through and we'd never get any more databases on line with requests like that. Instead we will suggest you order the microfilm for the newspapers through the Nebraska State Historical Society as an interlibrary loan. Their website is at http://www.nebraskahistory.org/

And Heaven forbid (and oh how I wish Heaven truly did), that you would send in a request for "everything you've got" on the Doe family or the village of Arborville.  Hmmmm, I bet you can guess what our response would be. We wouldn't do anything. It's not that we are trying to be uncooperative, but even though it is for a specific family or place, it would take us literally years to check through all our materials to find "everything you've got"!

So, please feel free to use us as a resource...but, show us the same considerations you would any other friend or fellow researcher by respecting our time too.

Visiting Our Office

Our building is located at 2329 Nebraska Avenue, in York. While our staff may be in-and-out of the building almost every day, our scheduled hours are:

Monday & Wednesday — 5:30 to 7:30 pm
Saturday — 9:00 to 12 noon
and by appointment

Why the limited hours? Our office is manned by volunteers — most who work during the day. It also gives us the flexibility to walk cemeteries, work with local schools, give public presentations, conduct oral histories, do outside research, and even attend an occasional class or two on preservation or collections when they are available...and still find time to be with our families.

We strongly urge you to contact us prior to your visit if you are coming from outside of our area. If at all possible we will try to arrange a time to accommodate your schedule. Our email address is yorkhistorical@alltel.net and our phone number is 402-362-2990.

Driving Instructions

If you are coming from downtown York
  • Go north on Grant Avenue (a one-way street). Stay in the left lane. The lane ends at 11th Street and you are forced back to Lincoln Avenue — just follow the double turns so you continue north.
  • Go through the underpass and continue north on Lincoln Avenue until you have passed the hospital and the Forest Heights apartment complex. Both will be on your right.
  • Make a right turn (east) on 4-H Road or 25th Street which are immediately after the Forest Heights apartment complex.
  • Turn right (south) at Nebraska Avenue.
  • Our office is the second metal building on the west side of the street, and there is a sign on the side of the building.

Note: an alternative from downtown is to go north on Nebraska Avenue until you reach our office. Nebraska Avenue is one block east of the courthouse.
If you are coming via Interstate 80, or on Highway 81 heading north into York
  • When you exit Interstate 80 at York (exit 353), you will be on Highway 81.
  • Go north on Highway 81 towards York. If you are coming straight to our office, it will be easier if you remain on Highway 81 and do not go through downtown York.
  • Turn east at the West 25th Street exit on Highway 81 — the same exit as the city airport, but the opposite direction of the airport.
  • Continue east until you reach the stop sign. This will be about a mile.
  • After stopping, continue east one more block to Nebraska Avenue.
  • Turn south (right) on Nebraska Avenue.
  • Our office is the second metal building on the west side of the street, and there is a sign on the side of the building.
If you are heading south into York via Highway 81 (coming from Benedict)
  • Turn east at the West 25th Street exit on Highway 81 — the same exit as the city airport, but the opposite direction of the airport.

  • After stopping, continue east one more block to Nebraska Avenue.

If you are heading into York via Highway 34, from the east (coming from Waco)
  • You will see an exit for York prior to reaching Highway 81. It will be the first intersection after Faller Landscaping. It's commonly called the "Y" as that intersection looks like a letter Y. Turn south (left).
  • Go to 25th Street, which is the corner south of the Hearthstone Nursing Home.
  • Turn east (left) on 25th Street, and go one block to Nebraska Avenue.
  • Turn south (right) on Nebraska Avenue.
  • Our office is the second metal building on the west side of the street, and there is a sign on the side of the building.
If you are heading into York via Highway 34, from the the west (coming from Bradshaw)
  • There will be a stop sign at the junction of Highway 34 and Highway 81.
  • Continue east (towards York) until you reach the next stop sign, which is about a mile.
