Almost half of York County was homestead land, where the ownership transfered from the United States to a homesteader who had "proven up" his claim. This index contains the name of homesteaders culled from the York County land records by Janet Finely and Rose Marie Hulse. The publication also contains the legal description of the homesteader's land, plus the book and page number where the patent is on file at the York County Courthouse.
