I have a
copy of the genealogical section of Secomb
[Daniel F. Secomb, History of the
Town of Amherst, Hillsborough County, N.H. (1883)]
and I will be happy to
provide lookups.
I have a
few other USGenWeb pages and am really looking
forward to getting back to my roots. My great
grandfather was born in Amherst, thirty-one years
after Horace Greeley. They both were intimately
aquainted with Ulysses Grant. My
great-grandfather Newton Timothy Hartshorn was a
portrait painter and did a marvelous charcoal
sketch of the President. He also served under
General U.S. Grant in the Virginia Peninsular
campaign as a Corporal in the U.S. Engineers. He
also followed Greeley's advice and bought land in
Minnesota Indian territory, at the present
Pillsbury conglomerate. However, Newton's new
bride, upon noting that they were under
observation by Indians, insisted they return to
the East. Shortly thereafter, a small family
turmoil erupted and he divorced his first wife
and remarried a much-younger spoiled, rich girl
from Cincinnati, Ohio. Together, they had eleven
children; born in four countries and five states.
They took two different ocean voyages with the
entire family. This providedfor an interesting
account of the family as told in family memoirs.
