                                                                                                Meeting of April 28, 2003

 

Vice-President John Ricard opened the meeting at 7 p.m. in the Senior Center.

 

Members present: President Dan Fleetham, Vice-pres. John Ricard, Historian & Corresponding Secretary Donna Zani Dunkerton, Secretary Carol Bergeron and members & guests: Patsy Carter, Pete & Betty Cummings, Louise Kremzner, Ed & Jackie Lary, Anne Neily, Jean Ricard, Ellen & Dietrich Schauff, Nancy Snyder, Charles Townsend

 

The minutes of the February 2003 meeting were accepted as read with the correction of the spelling of Barbara WhitmoreÕs name.

 

TreasurerÕs report was read by Reg Barney and accepted. 

 

Correspondence:  Pres.Fleetham  noted the 7th New England Regional Genealogical Conference.

 

Old Business:  Dan  requested a follow up on the Quilt exhibit: Nancy Snyder will head up a quilt exhibit at the Enfield Methodist Church on July 12th and is looking for quilts to be shown.  She will meet with the Canaan Quilting Committee regarding a show in Canaan in August.

            Museum: will open on the 4th of July.  The secretary will provide a sign up sheet at the June meeting so members can schedule their museum sitting times.

                        Snow Roller: Dan will attend the next meeting of the Historic District Commission and either Patsy Carter or Louise Kremzner will ask Mary Nordsey what remains to be done with our application.

 

New Business: Dan gave a brief history of the time in the 1960s when the artist Lumin Winters stayed at the Cobb House on Canaan St. Noted for many works, Winters was also the designer of the Air Force Academy Chapel.  While in Canaan, fortified by the Cobb House apple pie, Mr. Winters painted pictures of buildings in Canaan and a collage of the Canaan St. children.  Dan has three of the paintings, Margo Pinkerton has three, and the library gave two to Dan for the Society.

                        Chuck Townsend asked if we are interested in bidding on two issues of the Canaan Reporter from 1872-3 which are offered on eBay.  Chuck was authorized to bid up to $10.50.

                        Jack Snyder and his calliope will be featured at the National Circus Fans of America Big E on Sept 13-17th.

                         

 Program: The meeting adjourned to the second floor where Chuck showed  the video ÒLighting UpÓ by Margaret Whitmore.   It was a fascinating history of women mill workers and their first labor strike in New Hampshire. 

                        Refreshments followed.

The next meeting will be held June 23, 2003 at the Museum.
