        Canaan Historical Society Meeting of July 28, 2008

 

The meeting was called to order by Pres. Dan Fleetham at 7:00 p.m. in the Museum.

 

Members present: Pres. Dan Fleetham Sr, Vice Pres. Ed Lary, Treas. Reggie Barney, Rec. Sec. Carol Bergeron, Hist. & Corres. Sec. Donna Zani Dunkerton; members Pete & Betty Cummings, Jackie Lary, Chuck Townsend, Jean Ricard, Dan Fleetham Jr., Bob & Lorna Terhune.

 

Minutes of May 26, 2008 Meeting were accepted.

TreasurerÕs report was read and approved.

 

Correspondence:  Request received from a doctoral candidate, Univ. of Wisconsin, for information on Zerah Colburn, Methodist minister in Vermont & Canaan, 1825-35.

 

Old Business: Chuck reported the award by the National Trust for Historic Preservation Fund of $1500 to be used for a feasibility study of the George Kimball house.  The award will be combined with the gift of $1500 from Lamont Richardson.  Paul Mirski, a preservation architect, will conduct the study.  Chuck and the committee will meet with Mr. Mirski next Monday to discuss ideas and options.

 

New Business: Chuck showed the brochure he has made which gives information about the MuseumÕs history and hours, and the Historical Society and its officers. Donna moved and Dan, Jr. seconded a motion to finance the cost of the brochures at 50 cents each.  Motion carried.

It was also moved by Reggie and seconded by Ed to raise the SocietyÕs dues to $10.00 single and $15 family membership.  Motion was carried.

Dan requested a quote on the cost of repairing the MuseumÕs decaying columns.  Carol will ask John Bergeron to get this.

As a follow up to previous discussion of the SocietyÕs Trust fund, Jackie reported that based on an old town meeting, the fund belongs to the Museum for the benefit of the Museum

Snow Roller: Donna reminded us that the snow roller needs another coat of sealer.  She will contact Larry Tibbits about the fence which needs to be erected. Bob Cummings will borrow house jacks from DonnaÕs brother and Ed Lary will put the snow roller on two x fours and purchase and use the sealer. It was moved [Carol] and approved to cover the costs of the sealer and materials needed by Ed.

The next meeting, the Annual Meeting, will be held at the Senior Center September 22, 2008
