One of the Mountain County villages, Franconia was named for the German Franconian Alps.  It was first named Indian Head in 1764.  A charter was granted in 1772 as Morristown and renamed Franconia in 1782.  Franconia Notch is known for Mounts Lafayette, Lincoln, and Garfield, Profile and Echo Lakes, The Flume and The Basin and the infamous Old Man of the Mountain.  Franconia is located in Grafton County about 10 miles SE of the town of Bethlehem and  3.6 mile NW of Sugar Hill.
