Thomas live to the age of 116, which would have been a record in his
time, he died July 1929.
Thomas lead a life of adventure, he immigrated to the US in 1826 and
employed as a sailor for 6 years. He hunted and trapped in the
Yellowstone Park area of the Rocky Mountains before it was mapped. He
learned the cobbler trade in Springfield, IL and he said that he made
boots for Abraham Lincoln (who was 3 years older) and his political
rival Stephen A Douglas. When the Civil War broke out he was 40 years
of age and too old to fight, so instead he settled in Boston and made
shoes for Union soldiers. He was superintendant of bridge building
for the Northern Pacific transcontinental railroads. When the
Cherokee Strip opened up in Oklahoma 1891 Slaon wha at the time was
70 years old, made the run and obtained land. He settled there and
for 25 years was a cobbler in the town of Mulhall, OK. He was married
twice, his frist wife died in 1845 and his second wife Mary was 80
years old when they married. He was in an automobile accident at the
age of 115 and recovered. He had no children of his own. In the
latter years of his life he sold pictures of himself, becoming
somewhat of a folk hero. When he died in Guthrie, Ok a large crowd
attended his funeral at Sty Mary's Church and he was buried at Summit
View Cemetery.

The Means family is of Scottish decent, originally belonging to the
Clan Menzies. The family undoubtedly went to Ireland after one of the
many attempts by Queen Elizabeth to Protestantize the Emerald Isle.
The progenitor of the American family of Means was John who came from
County Down Ireland in 1717. His son John was the first in the family
to come to America and arrived in Boston in 1743. He married Isabelle
Harper in 1747 who after the death of her husband in 1789 moved to
South Carolina. Their sons Thomas, Robert and John acquired much land in
Fairfield Dist. South Carolina and left large estates. All of Thomas'
sons except one, graduated from South Carolina College Thomas was an
eminent man in his community and took and active interest in all
important affairs of his time.
There are today many descendants this early American family of Means
in the Southern States.
In the Irish & Anglo-Irish Landed Gentry By John O'Hart there is a
Sir John Means listed
there is a John Means, Gent listed in Henry's Upper Lough Erne in
1739 - Page 85 (do not have a copy)
in the The Foreign Missionary - Page 84
there is a mention of Estate of John Means, dec'd, Allegheny Co
some of these books are out of print but may be obtained at the
library.
It would seem that the family came to the US primarily via the above
mentioned John, that he had a daughter names Sarah, who married into
the Holms family.
A Marjorie Jorgenson Caskey is doing research on this line.

Patrick Rogers age 70 and Bridget Hagan aged nearly 60, were married
by Father Meyer, in St John's Chapel, Willoughby Ave, Brooklyn on
Sunday last. There is a little romance in the lives of the bride and
groom. About 40 years ago Patrick Rogers was engaged to marry Bridget
Hagan in County Down Ireland, but either on account of a lover's
quarrel or because some obstacle was interposed by the girls parents,
Rogers quitted his home and came to America. He took a peddler's pack
on his back and as he tramped the country roads and made his
acquaintances among strangers he gradually forgot his early love. He
was successful in business, and five years after his arrival in this
country he was married and settled in Brooklyn, keeping a small store
in Bushwick Ave. About a year ago his wife died. In the meantime
Bridget Hagan had quitted Ireland and come to live in Brookly. She
had never married and among her acquaintances were some who knew
Rogers. After Mrs Rogers died friends of the former lovers began to
interest themselves in their situation, and they were brought
together. They talked over the old days in Ireland, and the result
was that the engagement broken forty years ago was renewed, and it
ended in a wedding. The ceremony was private, but many of the
couple's friends gathered at Roger's house on Monday night and gave
them a serenade. Rogers made a speech and produced a keg of beer, and
the serenading party gave him and his wife three cheers and many good
wishes.

In the Chicago Tribune Jan 25, 1885
Wife Murder and Suicide
Cleveland Ohio Jan 24 (Special) This morning, at a little frame house
on Mulberry Street, on the west side, Michael Roche, a young Irishman,
nearly severed his wife's head from her body with a razor, and
afterwards gashed his own throat so that he died at city Hospital. The
deed was committed while Roche was in a drunken frenzy. The couple came
here from County Down Ireland via Liverpool, Jan 1. Roche went home
drunk early this morning and his wife fled for fear of him. He followed
her to a neighbor's house and half coaxed and half carried her home.
Later they were heard quarreling. The deed is supposed to have been
committed about 7 o'clock. It was discovered at 9.
