Burial site for six Revolutionary War soldiers killed in the
Baylor Massacre: "Six soldiers of those killed in the Baylor
Massacre were buried here in 3 abandoned tan vats. The vats were
part of a small tan yard which existed here before the revolution.
The gravesite was discovered in 1967 and the soldiers were re-interred
here in 1972." The plaque reads: "In memory of American
soldiers killed during the Revolutionary War in the 'Baylor Massacre'
on September 28, 1778. Lt. Col. George Baylor's 3red Regiment
of Continental Dragoons took quarters for the night on several
nearby farms. Tories betrayed their presence to a British force
who surrounded the Dragoons during the night. A number of Americans
were killed or wounded after they surrendered." A detail
of Baylor's Continental Dragoons was

at Haring's Tannery in River Vale. The bodies of several dead
soldiers were thrown into 3 vats.

information...) The Saddle River Reformed Church & Cemetery,
known as the Old Stone Church, has been ministering to the area
since 1784. Many Revolutionary and Civil War veterans are buried
here. I walked through the cemetery and saw a lot of graves from
the 18th & 19th centuries. The inscriptions on several tombstones
are illegible. I spoke to the Church secretary and she told me
they have incomplete records from 1784-1812. After 1812, the
records of births, marriages, and deaths are quite complete.
While walking in the cemetery, I noticed several illegible tombstones
with
- American
flags. The secretary told me that the church records exist for
all Revolutionary and Civil War veterans even though their tombstones
may be illegible. The Hackensack Public Library has Old Stone
Church records on microfilm. People can contact the Old Stone
Church for records at 201-327-5242. It is located on the corner
of East Saddle River Road and Old Stone Church Road in Upper
Saddle River. Church offices are one block north on East Saddle
River Road.
