The
Matochshoning-Rebecca Cornell Chapter was established
when the Matochshoning Chapter and the Rebecca
Cornell Chapter merged on April 24, 1998.
Our Organizing Regent was Dr. Felonese Kelley
(Mrs. Joseph) 1998-2001, who was succeeded by:
Rita L. Halpin (Mrs. James) 2001-2002
Donna R. Bowen (Mrs. William) 2002-2007
Diane Waugh Oliver (Mrs. Douglas) 2007-2010 |
| Matochshoning
Chapter was organized December 21, 1927, and
was named for an Indian Village, located at Metuchen.
This area is famous for a skirmish between the
the Americans and British during the Revolutionary
War, in front of the church in the village of
Woodbridge. The Organizing Regent was Lilliam

| The
Rebecca Cornell Chapter was organized December
14, 1915, and was named for a Real Daughter of
the American Revolution from Schoharie, New York--Rebecca
Cornell. Her grandfather, Capt. John Cornell,
fell at the storming of Fort Ticonderoga, 1758,
fighting under General Abercrombie. |
 |
|
Her
father, William Cornell, and her mother, Hannah
Finch, were captured by Indians but made their
escape.
William joined the American forces and was
an Ensign in the 5th
Tryon Co. Regiment under Colonel Harper. He
was captured by the British but a second time
escaped his captors. He was wounded at the Battle
of Oriskany, fighting under General Herkimer.
Rebecca married Horace Townsend in 1801 and
in the course of time was a mother to eleven
children.
