What is a Mailing List?
A Mailing List is a diverse group of people (subscribers) who unite (subscribe) to
discuss a particular topic. The subscribers could be from any part of the world. |
|
Who runs a Mailing List?
Mailing Lists are run by a "Listowner". He/she is the person solely
responsible for making the rules of the list. |
|
I've heard the name Maiser associated with genealogy mailing
lists, what is Maiser?
The Maiser Genealogy Mailing Lists were one of the premier mailing lists a few years
ago. The lists were "destroyed" by spammers and misuse. Due to this,
the person who handled the lists closed them down. The remnants were picked up by
RootsWeb and combined with their mailing lists to form what is now known as The RootsWeb Genealogical Data
Cooperative, The Internet's Oldest and Largest Genealogy Site. Because of what
happened to the Maiser lists it is important that all subscribers follow these guidelines. |
|

do I do?
When you successfully unsubscribe you will receive a COMPUTER generated message
telling you that you are unsubscribed. If you do not receive this message or you do
receive it and still receive mail please wait a few days, sometimes an ISP has a backlog
of messages queued. If you still receive mail then send an email to the following
address stating the problem:
If this is an emergency situation then please immediately send email to the above
address. DO NOT send email to the mailing list stating your problem. |
|
Is advertising allowed on the Mailing List?
Any type of advertising without the consent of the listowner, where money is exchanged, is
against ROOTSWEB policy and is STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Violators will be immediately
unsubscribed from the mailing list, put on the REJECT LIST, and have their ISP informed of
their behavior. If you have any questions on the above policy, please email the
listowner at: glenng@castle.net. |
|
How do I post a message to the list mode?
A message is posted to the list mode by addressing your email to the following
address
NJESSEX-L@Rootsweb.com Please notice that you DO NOT use the "Request"
address. Please make sure to read the questions below about appropriate and
inappropriate messages. |
|
How do I reply to a message from the list mode?
NJESSEX-L is set up so that your replies go to the person who posted the message and
not back to the NJESSEX-L mailing list. To reply to the person who posted the
message simply click on "reply" in your mail software. Remember to
"cut" all useless information from the quoted parts of your reply.
If your answer is of general interest, then "CC" the mailing list using the
following address:
NJESSEX-L@Rootsweb.com
Please note that this is the only time you can use the "CC" feature with
RootsWeb mailing lists. Please DO NOT "CC" personal messages to the
mailing list. |
|
What is NJESSEX-D?
NJESSEX-D is the digest mode of the Essex County Mailing List. When you
subscribe to the digest mode you will receive a single email that includes the individual
emails sent to the NJESSEX-L mailing list. This digest email will come either once a
day (providing there was a post to the list) or when the digest message character limit is
reached (whichever comes first). |
|
How do I subscribe to the digest mode?
You subscribe by sending an email to the following address:
NJESSEX-D-request@Rootsweb.com
Please leave the subject line blank, put only the word "subscribe" in the body
of the email and no signatures. You can only subscribe to the list from the email
address that you wish to receive the mail. If you have subscribed successfully you will
receive a COMPUTER generated message acknowledging the action, please read the message in
full. |
|
How do I unsubscribe from the digest mode?
You unsubscribe by sending an email to the following address:
NJESSEX-D-request@Rootsweb.com
Please leave the subject line blank, put only the word "unsubscribe" in the body
of the email and no signatures. You can only unsubscribe from the list from the
email address that you receive the mail. You CANNOT unsubscribe by replying to list

|
How do I post a message when I'm in the digest mode?
A message is posted by those subscribers in the digest mode by addressing your email
to the following address:
NJESSEX-L@Rootsweb.com
Please notice that you DO NOT use the "Request" address or the NJESSEX-D
address. Please make sure to read the questions below about appropriate and
inappropriate messages. |
|
How do I reply to a message when I'm in the digest mode?
When you hit the reply button on your email software to reply to a message in the
NJESSEX-D mode, the mail is automatically sent to the NJESSEX-L list. Because of
this, you have to manually remove the NJESSEX-L address and insert the address of the
person you wish the message to go to. If your message has general information and
you wish it to go to the mailing list then you have to insert the address of the person
who asked the question into the "CC" line. Please remember to
"cut" all parts of the digest message out (other messages in the digest) that
dont pertain to what you are answering. |
|
I can't figure out a subscribers name, I only see their email
address?
All subscribers should have their real names somewhere in their post. If your
email software doesn't support a real name and an email address in the "FROM"
line please sign the bottom of your post with your real name. It would also help the
person responding to your email if you listed at least the state you're from, if not the
town. |
|
What are appropriate subjects for the mailing list?
Genealogy/History questions and information pertaining to Essex County only! |
|
What are inappropriate subjects for the mailing list?
Everything else (see above question). This list is not the place for jokes,
recipes, warnings about computer viruses, idle chit-chat, me too replies, etc. There
are very important reasons for this so please abide by this rule. Those who
dont are subject to removal from the mailing list. Please, DO NOT reply
to any inappropriate subject. |
|
ANNOUNCEMENT POLICY
The announcement must be for a non-profit organization promoting a Genealogical
event. It must be specifically aimed at the Essex County Genealogist. It must
contain the following information:
Name of Organization
Address of Organization
Phone number of Organization
Location of Event
Purpose (including date, time and topics)
Name of Contact person
Email address of Contact person
Fee, if anyMOST IMPORTANTLY - the
announcement for the event cannot be directly posted to the mailing list. It must be
sent to me, as list administrator, for approval. When approved I, not the submitter,
will post the announcement to the mailing list. Anyone who posts an
announcement to the mailing list will be subject to being locked out of the mailing
list. |
|
Are Rollcalls allowed on this list?
No. Everyone should post their surnames to the Essex
County Query Board. All new subscribers should read this FAQ first and learn
about the Essex County Query Board and post their surnames there. All old
subscribers should visit the Query Board periodically. If you haven't posted to the
query board, please do it now! |
|
What is the difference between an open mailing list and a
closed mailing list?
An open mailing list allows non subscribers to send email to the list but it does
not allow them to receive list mail. A reply must be sent to the individual. A
closed list does not allow non subscribers to post. Only subscribers can post to a
closed mailing list. |
|
Is NJESSEX a closed or open mailing list?
At this time it is a closed mailing list, as is every RootsWeb Mailing List.
Non subscribers cannot post to the list. |
|
I've just received spam from the mailing list, what do I do?
Once you recognize it as spam, don't read any further, just delete it and get on
with your life, that's all you do, even if the spam is the most rude, insulting piece of
garbage you ever read. If you wish, you can send a personal note to the
listowner stating that you received spam through the mailing list, BUT be aware
that the listowner received the same spam and has/will act upon it. If you wish, you
can figure out what ISP sent the mail and send them the offending spam. (The offending ISP
is NOT RootsWeb.com). Once you figure out the ISP just address
the spam to "abuse@(ISP). Example: the return address says
"television@bigsky.com". You would complain to
"abuse@bigsky.com". BUT, rest assured that the ISP address was
probably forged and you'll get the mail back. BUT, sometimes you do get lucky and
catch the spammer. In that case the ISP will close their account. DO NOT
send the spam back to the mailing list. DO NOT reply to the spam in any form
even if it says "If you do not wish to receive any more notices just reply to this
message with the word remove in the subject line". Please remember that by
replying you just send the message back to the mailing list. If you received
personal spam (not through the mailing list) NEVER, NEVER reply either, it just
gives them a live email address to sell to other spammers. Remember, a person who
forges an email address to send you spam is very unlikely to "remove" your name
from his list. Does all this sound confusing? Then just reread the first
sentence. |
|
Can I send attachments to the list?
No attachments of any kind are allowed to be sent to the mailing list. This
includes Vcards and the like. |
|
When I get my messages back from the list there's allot of
mumbo jumbo about HTML coming before my actual message. I didn't put that there,
what is it?
The mailing lists do not allow HTML coding in messages. This is because some
email programs can't handle it and the message then becomes unreadable. Also the
extra coding puts an unnecessary burden on the Rootsweb servers. To configure your
email software so you don't use HTML go to the following address:
http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm |
|
I didn't like the tone of a message, what should I do?
Send a personal message to the person sending and/or send a personal message to the
listowner. DO NOT send any messages to the mailing list. No flames
are allowed. |
|
I have a suggestion, complaint, compliment. How do I
handle that?
Send a personal message to the listowner. DO NOT send the message to the
mailing list. |
|
I asked a question and someone answered me, what should I do?
Thank them, but do it through a personal email, not to the mailing list. If
you only get one reply, thank them. If you're fortunate to get multiple
replies, thank each person. It doesn't take much time to hit the reply button
for each answer you get. The worst thing that you can do is ask questions and never
thank anyone. You will find that your sources dry up real soon. Please
remember never send a thank you to the list always use personal email. |
|
I've noticed that sometimes the Subject line does not
correspond with the content of the email. What causes this?
When people reply to a message their email software automatically places the old Subject
line into the reply. When replies are made to replies sometimes the content of the
email changes. When this happens you must manually change the Subject line to
reflect the new content. If you don't, than those people who were not interested in
the old Subject, will delete the message without reading it and you will miss an
opportunity to reach the entire mailing list with your question. |
|
Can I type my messages in all Caps?
No, typing in all capital letters is considered shouting on mailing lists (with the
exception of surnames). Please type normally using capital and small letters. |
|
How do I post my surnames in a message?
When posting surnames in a message use all capitol letters for the surname. This
applies to the subject line as well as the body of the message. |
|
Are these lists archived?
Yes, you can search the archives of this and all other RootsWeb Mailing lists by going to
the following address: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl
For this list, use "NJESSEX-L" for the name of list. |
