Campaign Trails
Now showing at the Museum at the Gloucester County Historical Society until January 2, 2009……. A collection of Presidential election and campaign memorabilia is currently on display in our featured exhibit entitled Campaign Trails. This timely exhibit coinciding with our upcoming national presidential election reflects the deep rooted pride Americans have in the democratic process. A comprehensive collection of not only campaign material from the past but also presidential memorabilia, provide a peek into political climates spanning the past two centuries. A wide spectrum of artifacts is on display including political buttons, posters, ribbons, bandanas, flags, photographs, campaign literature, and more. Among some of the most impressive pieces are ballot boxes and ballots from the 1800’s, campaign bandanas from the 1800’s, a weathervane from the 1840 William Henry Harrison campaign, along with a flag from the same campaign – “Tippecanoe and Tyler (too),” patriotic quilts from the same time period (also featuring President Harrison logos - Colestown was renamed Harrisonville after his victory), various Democratic and Republican National Convention tickets and ribbons, a flag from Ulysses S. Grant’s campaign, tickets to the “Impeachment of the President” (Andrew Johnson) in 1868, a ladies ensemble worn to the 1908 Republican National Convention (before women had the right to vote), a Franklin D. Roosevelt license plate, a gold Taft pin, and candid presidential photographs. Some rare President Lincoln memorabilia on display include two different 1860’s ferrotype (tintype photograph) pins, a Lincoln mourning ribbon, relics from Lincoln’s catafalque (funeral/lying in state), a chair from Ford’s Theater where Lincoln was assassinated, and an original Currier and Ives lithograph of Lincoln on his deathbed. Also featured are numerous American flags from the 19th and 20th centuries including one hand sewn by the granddaughter of Betsy Ross. A tribute to the First Ladies is also featured in several unique vignettes. The museum’s hours are Mon.-Wed.-Fri. from 1-4 p.m., and the last Sunday of the month from 2-5 p.m., with the exception of August 31st due to the Labor Day Weekend holiday. Adult admission is $4; children 6-18 years is $1; members and children under 6 years of age are free.
