In Memoriam Arnold Lang The creator and long-time Webmaster of this page, Arnie Lang, passed away recently. He was past-President of the Society, expert in immigration and naturalization, experienced genealogist, and teacher. He was always learning something new and sharing it with others. He will be greatly missed. A Memorial Fund has been established by the Society in his memory. For those of you who would like to make a contribution in Arnie's name, you might like to have one of the Society's memorial tribute cards sent to the family to express your sympathy and notify the family that you have made a donation in his memory. Who are we?
Bergen County, founded in 1682, is located in the northeastern corner of New Jersey. Prior to 1840 Bergen County also included the areas that are now Hudson and Passaic Counties. Settlement was begun in the mid-1600's, and many descendants of these early families still remain in this area.
The Genealogical Society of Bergen County
(GSBC), is a non-profit society founded in 1973, whose original purpose was to provide a forum for those searching for their family heritage. This original purpose has been expanded to include seeking out and preserving information about the families and genealogical records of the greater Bergen County area, and offering educational and other assistance to all those interested in genealogical research. The GSBC now provides classroom training and seminars to educate and promote interest in family history, publishes a quarterly newsletter, and maintains a genealogical library and other records. Library The society has an ever expanding library collection that is located at the Local History and Genealogical Section of the Reference Room on the 2nd floor of the Ridgewood Public Library. This collection of genealogies, books, periodicals, newsletters, journals, and CD's concentrates on Bergen County and its surrounding areas. Additionally, there are numerous reference materials covering basic genealogy and other parts of the world. Donations of applicable genealogical books, etc., to the GSBC library are always welcome.
The GSBC collection augments the Ridgewood Library's own impressive collection of local history and genealogy references. A file of member's pedigree charts and family group sheets is also maintained at the library.
The collection is open during normal library hours. Members of the GSBC are available at the library to assist in genealogical research at prearranged times. Click here to see a schedule of hours for the coming month. Also, anyone interested in volunteering to assist at the library should please contact the Library Committee Chair.

Vertical Family Files
Family Information furnished by GSBC members are maintained in File Cabinets at the Library. These generally include Family Group Records, Family Trees, and sometimes the related source material. All members are encouraged to submit Family Group Records, Family Trees, and other relevant material. Preferably, it is suggested that this information be provided as a file from your computer genealogical program (such as Family Tree Maker, Legacy, The Master Genealogist, etc.,) to expedite entry of this data into our searchable database. These files may be submitted on a floppy disk, Cd-Rom, or via e-mail. This information has been entered into a genealogy software program so that names and relationships may be easily found by just entering a name. This project has been completed, and it includes more than 65,000 names. This information will be available on CD sometime in the near future. Click here to send a message to learn how to submit your information and/or to obtain more information about this project. Return to Top
